Japan ought to tell the U.S. to stick it. The Americans would not dare to do anything to hurt their number one buddy in Asia. Japan could go further and say that all the fear mongering against Iran is bogus, just as it was against Iraq before the US invaded it. Whatever you have to say about the idiotic theocratic regime running Iran there is no evidence that that country is out to hurt anyone or even make nuclear weapons.

Japan, as well as other SOVEREIGN nations, should thank the US for their input and then respectfully decline the suggestion. Then, Japan should offload their stockpile of junk US bonds before the value goes through the floor. Notice the US is not trying to bully China, because...? China holds a very large quantity of US debt. What if they simply stopped buying? The whole point is the US (government, not the nice citizens ) needs to stop the playground-bully politcs and start getting along with others, or get ostracized by the international community. The Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated;Do unto others as you would have them do unto you;Give respect to get respect. Ron Paul 2012

Kabukilover: "Japan ought to tell the U.S. to stick it."

Actually, what Japan wants to do is talk tough against Iran, but still rely on them for oil while being exempt from the consequences of doing such. It's quite pathetic, really. Japan is stating, "Ummm... we agree with you, but uhhh... we won't do what you want... but ummm... can you please understand our position and cooperate, and not get angry and please exempt us from punishment? Sure, we're supporting Iran's nuclear program by continuing to rely on them for oil, but we're Japanese! We're not bad guys!"

Can't have your cake and eat it too. No, if Japan wants to stick it to the US, then they should suffer the consequences, not beg to be an exception. On the contrary, the US should squarely tell Japan they can do as they choose with regard to the sanctions on Iran, but they will get no waiver and be no exception.

My guess is Japan would have ZERO qualms, and even agree with, other countries not getting waivers for not following the penalties the US is seeking to impose on Iran, but somehow feel they themselves are entitled to one.

Typical Japan -- taking a stand with words only. Yup, Japan thinks Iran needs to change, but not at the expense of earning money from their central bank.

You know nothing about debt. Please read more. Most US Debt is held by Americans, just like almost all Japanese debt is held by Japanese. That is why Japan is still super strong and America also, unlike the EU debt countries.

Another stupid attempt by the Noda administration! He was new and green to diplomacy. Japan cant refuse US demands and pressure when thry are serious! Japan is no China that is capable to say NO when things gets nasty! By the way,Japan has lost her influences in world economy, the Canuck first came up in mind to sell oil is China when their 'keystone' pipeline to america was rejected!

Japan needs to do what is best for Japan in this case.... they need the Iranian oil... or if they do stop buying it, then they must convince the US to sell it oil at the same price as the Iranian oil... fair enough yes?? In reality, Japan really needs to diversify it's resources and become a real player again, without the direction of Washington. They can develop energy constructs with Russia in the nearby Kuril islands for natural gas and oil... they also need to start pulling gas from the East China Sea... although China will get angry... but Japan needs to do this in order to survive. What, they should let China drain all the gas? With multi-national energy deals with its Asian neighbors, Japan can become a "real" country , slowly wean itself off the USA... and finally other REAL PLAYERS will take Japan seriously, cause these days, everybody around these parts (East Asia) looks at Japanfor what it is, a puppet of the US.

bello420: "Japan needs to do what is best for Japan in this case...."

They certainly should, but the government is behaving like a spoilt child thinking it can say, "Iran is bad" to the US, then "We'll keep buying your oil" to Iran, then asking the US to make an exception for Japan. You can't have it both ways, and thinking they are entitled to have it both ways is one reason why Japanese politics and politicians are a laughing stock (there are other reasons as well, but hey).

Cut dependency on Iran in line with the sanctions, or face the consequences with Japan's central bank.

Japan and Iranian Oil Resentment of U.S. policy even in Japan today. No strong political leadership emerging in U.S. today, Corporations taking that role, destroying the very fabric of that country - MIC (Military Industrial Complex) with American, Israeli and Saudi shareholders profits on constant war, feeds the myths of 'The Noble American Warrior,' even a part of the social fabric there now, to provide cannon fodder to arm the machines of war there. Once nation builders, today even American youth "train" on violent video games, war simulators, dumbed down at school for this "noble" purpose - to bully other nations to churn the war chests, for the shareholders "skim". Syria is provoked by Israel's Mossad, as they feed lies and money to discontents in that country - every damned Mossad member a shareholder in MIC stocks. Saudis not innocent either. Unfortunately Japan does not stand to profit directly from war with Iran.

JapanGal, take your own advice. China owns 10% of US debt(depending on whose numbers you believe ), followed by Japan with 6.4%. Most of the US debt IS held domestically, and I didn't say otherwise. The FED now holds 11.3% and borrowed from Social Security is 19%. The rise in the US government debt has been out of control and is unsustainable.

My MAIN point is that the US should mind its own business, and not only with regards to Japan. This oil embargo business is another way the US is essentially telling other nations what and how to do things, or else. Nobody likes the neighborhood busybody nor the schoolyard bully.

Sorry Noda, find a new supply line. The sanctions are a last ditch attempt to avert another war. If they fail you aren't going to get any more oil from there anyway.

Noda thinks it's good for Japan in the long run to test the patience of (so far) friendly governments. Or maybe he's looking as far as he knows his political career will last. Who would trust someone who won't leave the revolving door? I thought the Belgians had it bad there for a second, without a government and all...

Japan really should learn to play along or get used to play alone.
