Noda to forego daily interviews in favor of press conferences

TOKYO —

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda will hold news conferences rather than speaking to reporters on a daily basis, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said Monday.

However, Fujimura said that the prime minister would not be holding a news conference every day, without elaborating.

Prime ministers since Junichiro Koizumi have given briefings to reporters at least once a day. But after the March 11 disaster, Prime Minister Naoto Kan stopped the practice, leaving it up to his chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edanao, to brief the press each day.

Also Noda needs to conduct daily briefing with cabinet members. I am sure every cabinet members can get there by 9 a.m.

Good, it might prolong Noda's tenure by few months.

Is there any cabinet position called as a "Press Secretary" in Japan?

some14some, sounds like you do not like Noda. Why so? To me, he is doing a lot better than I expected.

It's amazing that the press expect to be updated by "the top dog" on a daily basis. Surely he's got more important things to be doing.

Hope PM Noda hires someone who can perform this job function. I welcome this as a change in Japanese political process. So many changes are needed until all Tohoku are being restored. We all have to be informed.

just-a-guy, this is unthinkable for China, but Japanese PM has committed at UN Assembly that Japan will not go back to INWARD. He is trying to fulfill his obligations to all of you and us (world) TRANSPARENCY..

Beware of being too transparent, people may be able to see right through you

@globalwatcher......Of course this is unthinkable and may I know when did Japan was being 'OUTWARD"? Mr Noda better complete his so-called obligations ASAP otherwise he has to go, for time being he is an'out-going PM'!

Please tell me what does he need to complete ASAP? I am confused. Restration of Tohoku takes long time. He has just became a PM less than 30 days ago. He is not making pancakes as you know.

His meaning of 'OUTWARD translates to TRANSPARENCY. I have read his original speech at UN in English.

Christina, I agreed. That's the reason he needs to hire a Press Secretary with a strong communication background.

I think that both are bad ideas. PM'S should just remain quiet as much as possible. Japanese PM's have a history of gaffes that get them into trouble. Especially press conferences. How about just giving interviews with a made up reporter. You know kind of like the informercials that put us all to sleep. At least if we fall asleep we can't remember the stupid things that they say. But a press conference? How about just walking through a minefield? Same thing.
