If the Koreans argue that historically, the Islands belong to them, shouldn't half of them belong to NORTH KOREA? After all, North Korea is half of Korea.

Anyway, if at anytime this situation is decided in an international court, all the loser needs to do is to bomb the islands off the map and then the area becomes international waters; there, i said it.

www.ForTheNextGeneration.com is right, the islands belong to South Koprea and I expect the New York Times will soon zero in on the Senkaku Islands which actually belong to the Government of the Ryukyu Islands.

The islands do not belong to South Korea, but Japan's claim isn't really any stronger. Two islands, two countries...logical conclusion would be to split them. The islands have too tangled a history. The Government of the Ryukyu Islands does not exist, that would be like the Kingdom of Hawai'i still existing.

If the Koreans argue that historically, the Islands belong to them, shouldn't half of them belong to NORTH KOREA? After all, North Korea is half of Korea.

I would rather see the islands at the bottom of the sea than in North Korean possession.

What good will this ad do, I wonder? Will it rally people to support the Korean side or the Japanese side? The intent of course is to have people support the Korean claim, but then it is not very convincing.

My wife claims that these are Korean Islands, and that they always have been, and she wonders why Japan doesn't recognize those islands as Korean. My wife is from Seoul, by the way (and I side with Korea on this issue, but not just because of my wife).....

Ossan: "I seriously wonder about a nation where 50,000 can get bent out of shape over beef or spend tons of money to try and convince the rest of the world that a body of water should be called what they call it, a name that makes absolutely no sense to anyone other than themselves."

Ignorance is bliss. If it made no sense other than to yourself, you wouldn't ask, according to your logic. Thanks for making no sense other than 'to anyone other than yourself'.

According to my logic, you ask others to understand what makes sense only to you because your arguments can cause others to see your point of view. In the case of the "east sea" this point of view can't be seen by others because it reflects a relative geographical point of view.

"My wife claims that these are Korean islands"

Well, that's it then! End of discussion!

Do Koreans even know that Japan and ROK exchanged an instrument of ratification of the new Japan-ROK Fisheries Agreement, which entered into force in January, 1999? In the agreement, the two countries agreed to the establishment of “provisional common waters” around Takeshima/Dokdo without prejudice to the title to this island. Since then, however, Japanese fishing boats have still been shut out of the fishing grounds in the area. The local fishermen in Shimane Prefecture became increasingly impatient and discontented with this situation. Such situation led to the reannouncement of Shimane Prefecture that Takeshima belongs to Japan. Before emotionally protesting against Japan, why don’t Koreans keep the agreement?

As for "East Sea!, this is the one name that Japan will never recognize as it lies directly west of Japan. Imagine the U.S. calling the Pacific the East Ocean. It would never happen. If the Koreans had been wise to begin with and wanted another name besides Sea of Japan, they should have came up with an intelligent compromise to begin with instead of something Japan would reject outright. Morons. Japan, as usual, shows they are the more mature country by not trying to remame the universally recognized "Korea Strait".

that cloisionne globe I bought in Beijing says "Sea of Japan." So I guess that pretty much settles that part of it.

  • berri_fusion at 08:49 AM JST - 14th July

    S. korea is smaller anyways, why the need for a whole sea? lol.

  • berri_fusion at 08:53 AM JST - 14th July

if ww2 worked out for Japan, Korea would have been West Japan anyways, so why call it the East Sea? lol.

They should set up an egg & spoon race at the Olympics between South Korea, North Korea & Japan ( Russia & China might be invited to join in too). The winner gets to keep the islands. My only worry would be are Chinese spoons strong enough to support an egg & since I doubt they are who can we get to provide the spoons without causing offence?

Waste of money, who in America cares anyway?

Obviously, the Korean people should have claimed that Tsima belongs to Korean territory. Now, the Japanese government has demanded that Dakeshima is actually party of Japanese territory, raising a serious political outrage in Korea. If Korea raises Tsima issue to Japan, what reactions do Japanese people take?
