Okinawans urge gov't to confer from unified position over Futenma

TOKYO —

About 30 Diet members, local politicians and civic group members from Okinawa urged the central government Tuesday to negotiate with the United States from a unified position over where a U.S. military airfield in the prefecture should be relocated.

‘‘In the government led by the Democratic Party of Japan, the differences (among cabinet members) are so conspicuous and the people of Okinawa are worried about that. We urged the government to solidify its policy,’’ Naha Mayor Takeshi Onaga told reporters after meeting with Senior Vice Defense Minister Kazuya Shimba.
