Let`s face an obvious fact: Japanese population birth rate is on decline and the LDP never ever thought of measures to reverse the phenomenon, because their main priorities was to favor the corporates and use the public money for infrastructures construction, which had its uses until 1990 to rebuild a country that had been ruined by the war. But now realities have changed and the new generations are just completely lost. The rule of LDP must seize for the good of the next generation. The debt is already huge in Japan so what ? Would I want a government to spend taxpayers money in useless public works and manga museum to please the corporate lobby or in healthcare and family care to set the birth rate on the rise once more? Answer is obvious. In Jiminto, there is the "ji" of jiji. Hatoyama might not be a young playboy but at least his measures are oriented more towards the future of the next generations.

The LDP is trying to solve the problems of the early 1990's with policies from the 1970's. It is like a tour around a political museum. Give corporate Japan what they want and everything will turn out OK!

    Not any more!

souryeki -- agree completely. The LDP has spent so many years pandering to their special interests -- big business, particularly construction; rice farmers; the elderly; etc. -- that they totatally ignored what impact they were having on the real future of Japan. Now young people don't want to marry or have kids, because they can't afford to, and they will be burdened with a huge public debt and much higher taxes to pay for the monstrous pension and health-care liabilities. All the great roads the LDP paved won't matter, because young folks can't afford the gas or the tolls, let alone a car to drive.

I agree 100% with souryeki, except that I wanted to add that the DPJ also fails to clearly present HOW their solutions would be implemented.

In short, we're dealing with a bunch of parties with NO answers who are simply pandering to the public. Whichever party wins, as soon as the election is finished and the subsequent nomikais are done, they're going to sit down at an overpriced table in a newly renovated office and say, "What the hell do we do now?" There's no way either party can even begin to live up to their promises, save to levy taxes.

At least the LDP seem to admit that taxes will need to go up. The DPJ are taking an Obama line that they can simply create money out of thin air.

is there a chance that DPJ stop useless fingerprinting and photographing spouses and PRs or they will keep separating families? Hatoyama`s brother (LDP) implemented this at first stage. Anyway I hope LDP win and would love to see what is going to change in Japan.

Sorry, I meant I hope DPJ wins....
