"ice-locked seas...and muddy swamps fed by melting snow in spring" would probably mean, a pristine, untouched, beautiful and fragile eco-system. muddy swamps would mean breeding grounds for birds and marine life. And it's all gonna be smashed.

Japan should not buy or help Russia develop these gas fields. Remember what happened to the Ukraine? Russia will soon hold Japan hostage through this energy source. They need to sell it to the Europeans and Chinese.

teleprompter you make me laugh. Anyway, doesn't that island belong geographically and culturally to the Ainu? Chinese took it over for awhile. Then the Russians and Japanese shared it for awhile. Whose island is it? YuriOtani has a point. But I also think Japan, SK and the US have taken this into consideration in the contracts. One must.

OneForAll, I must disagree with you on this. Japan is so far down the priority list it would feel the pinch of insufficient supplies. Or perhaps Japan would be pressured to sigh away the northern territories in exchange for gas.

Not quite on subject, I heard that the Russians have made "officers" urinals of the memorial markers for the Japanese cemeteries. Is this true?
