Anyone who invests anything in Russia, deserves precisely what they will get back. Nothing. Same thing for Venezuela. Simply a foolish place to invest your money, when you know both countries have no hesitation in nationalizing anything.
I say form a new country. Promote tourism, drilling, mineral gathering. Move some Ainu up there, as that is where they came from anyway, and teach the Russians how to make things properly.
‘‘We do not mean to try to conclude a peace treaty as a way of expanding economic exchanges,’’ said Putin, who was president from 2000 to 2008. ‘‘We are trying to develop economic exchanges in order to conclude a peace treaty.’’
Genius politicking... make sure Russia gets what it wants first, and if not there will be no 'treaty concluded' (as in, no chance in hell of the islands being given to Japan).
No Northern Territories, no peace treaty. It is that simple. I do not see Russia ever giving back those islands and will soon steal Japans "investment" in Russia as well. Russia has proven time and time again it can not be trusted. As soon as they get maximum Japanese investment the Russian courts will strike and take it all away. Perhaps our people there will be taken hostage or in other words be put in Russian prison for their "crimes". They have be untrustworthy since 1945 and their are no signs of a change.
YuriOtani: "No Northern Territories, no peace treaty."
Russia seems to be doing pretty well without a peace treaty with Japan, so who cares? It would be nice to have the shiny paper that says they're at peace, but Russia knows that it will only benefit Russia FIRST to get what they want... THEN consider a peace treaty (and knowing Russia, reject it).
smithinjapan, I would like to see an embargo of Russia by Japan. It would be in Japans interests. Russia is going to steal any money invested by Japan sooner or later. This will protect the greedy Japanese firms from themselves.
Japans problem is not following its self interests by trying to placate Washington. The Americans are still telling Japan to do after all of these years. If Russia wants to reject the Peace treaty, Japan needs to reject trade treaties. Thus no peace treaty, no trade, no travel, no overflight rights, no other activities. Given a very few years Japan could protect herself from the Russian/Chinese aggression. It is in Russia's interest for a Peace treaty. Let them swim in them unsold oil/gas.
Why should Russia return the islands to Japan? On what ground?
1.getting those islands was a condition of Russia to enter the Pacific war (Potsdam conference).Truman was scared till the last moment of land war in Japan. The rough figure was about 1 million US soldiers who could have died there. It didnt happen. After Russia (the last Japans hope) entered the war, the war was over.If entering the war made the end of the war happen faster, Russia has the right on war trophies. When US got from Russia what they wanted, they "forgot" about their promise in Potsdam. Not a dirty move? How typical..
2.the only ground that Japan always says: islands were always Japanese. It means nobody can touch Japanese land.Wow! But they didnt apply the same rule when they entered Asian countries and took their lands with blood.Their texbook say: Japan needed new territories, so we started the war.It means according to J-mentality and school books they have this right, but somebody else: no way! Not a racism?
3.Law of war is as it is.Japan has been hiding for centuries from the rest of the world. How much they are surprised that the law of war worked on the too.Russians are actually the only one who showed Japanese that there will be no special rules for Japan and took something that was Japanese by origin: you lost the war means you lost.
3.if those islands were taked by another war party on the same condition (join the war), most of people wouldnt say what they say.It is happening because they dislike Russia and it has nothing to do with anything else.Double standard policy in presence.
And just what they need japanese to like them for? Do you need me to like you? Then send me 1000 dollars. This would open the road (with luck) for me to like you. I even can sign a peace treaty with you.

Here is one option and solution I bat they don't discuss: ** Blow the islands up and sink them to the bottom of the ocean. No more dispute!**

shiratori Why should Russia return the islands to Japan?
Answer, they would like a peace treaty with Japan with full normal relations. This would open the road (with luck) for Japanese to like Russians.
