Time to see if all that training with the US military is going to pay off. I for one was getting tired of my tax dollars being spent on these guys to go to California, Oregon, and even Hawaii under the guise of "training" ! Now off you go... earn yer keep ! Learn what real soldiering is all about ! Boy can't wait for the media outcry the first time one of these guys/gals is sent back in a wooden crate ! War is hell campers... best keep yer head down and powder dry !
I think that's poor logic. The first/main purpose of the SDF is to defend Japan, not to go off and fight or even peace keep (that's a secondary priority). I other words they don't have to enter a war-zone to "earn their keep". Proper training is key to deterring aggressive nations like NK and maintaing Japanese security.
The problem with "your" logic is that when SDF personnel head off to these hot spots they are inevitably under the protection of US and various other military forces. Having spoken with some of these people, trust me, they would prefer that the J's stay home ! I for one would agree. Pick up a gun and fight, or stay home and out of the way ! BTW, what is Japan's direct interest in the Sudan anyway ? My tax dollars are begging to know !

I say if they are going to go, do so with the attitude of self reliance and getting yer hands dirty... not to be protected by the US military, they already have their hands full. In short, if the Japanese are going to need babysitters... don't go ! My tax dollars will be extremely grateful !
Given how the SDF has evolved and organized since 1954, they are progressing as conditions surrounding Japan changes. At the present time, the SDF needs operational experience as well as "airing out" operational procedures in actual situations, though at a specific risk tolerance. The significant aspects to actual SDF deployment, though under specific conditions, is to work w/ and coordinate w/ other military personnel, especially UN Multinational Teams. Japan does have a lot to offer in technical capabilities, and could be an important contributor in future multinational endeavors. I think there are still many who share this view.
Research? conducting DNA tests? as if Sudan came into existence just recently...they never had embassy or consular staff in Sudan? Why waste time and money for sending 2-3 SDF personnel there.
What you are seeing is yet another step in the morphing of the SDF to become the Imperial Japanese Army and of course the quashing of Article 9 of the Japanese Peace Constitution.
You should always keep in mind that Japan is now a Plotonium Superpower.
What's the SDF going to do when it comes under attack? It can't possibly be expecting the UN Peacekeepers to protect it? Look how well they have done for the Sudanese....
