Well, the further the war recedes into history the more Japan seems to still be fighting it, except this time as a propaganda war with Japan as either the heroic liberator or blameless victim.

Yeah but Soviet Union's act is against the Yalta declaration, San Francisco peace treaty and the Japan Soviet Union non aggression pack. Hell it even goes against normal war time protocol in which the Soviets continued to invade Japan after a cease fire had been established.

Japan recognizes that the Soviet Union had violated all protocols and demand immediate return of Japanese sovereign territory.

@ Triring. Many people think the Japanese NTs were just handed over to the Russians. No. There was a formidable defense mounted by one of Japanese MOST brilliant military officer by the name of Kenji Ishihara, an officer I have respect for in the military sense, but was caught on the wrong side of history. He was rumored to have been the mastermind of the Mukden incident. He incident. He had been put in charge of defence of the Aleutian Islands and when Russians joined the war he called the IJA to arms and tried to defend the NTs.

After what Japan did prior & during WWII they don't have much of a leg to stand on in this "claim"

Cogito Ergo Sum

Sorry but you write about is Battle of Shumshu not occupation of the norther territories.

The Soviet Union continued to invade and occupy after September 2nd, the official day of signing of surrender in which they occupied the northern territories on Sept. 5th.

"Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday it was impossible to solve a territorial dispute with Japan unless Tokyo formally recognises the outcome of World War Two."

Well they ARE recognizing it. The USSR stole the four islands. The US an UK agrees.

It will not happen Lavrov-chan, Japan wants at least 2 of the islands in return for the treaty.

Russia's Lavrov says Japan should recognise World War II outcome

Japan: Ok.........we lost.....because you cheated by breaking the non-aggression pact. Russia: We gave you notice we were dissolving the pact, before we attacked. Did you give us any notice in 1904? Japan: Um, maybe yes, maybe no. We don't remember. But you still cheated. Give us our islands back! Russia: Niet!

Then no Peace Treaty Christopher, Russia has offered two islands and Japan should take that offer. Nothing for a treaty is unacceptable

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Russia did offer two islands once, and Japan refused. Moreover Japan has sided with the US against Russia over Ukraine. I doubt 2 islands would be on the table now

Then Christopher, there will be no peace treaty. What possible reason does Japan have to sign it?
