The above article states: "Despite the overall financial gloom in Japan, the capital exists in something of a bubble, and still boasts eye-wateringly expensive eateries and shops stocking the world’s finest luxury goods."

Well, if Abe and the LDP once again take over Japan, they have vowed to end deflation and bring back inflation. If so, expect the bubble that surrounds Tokyo to see the prices go even higher. Just hope at least some of those "cheap" deflationary places still exist in the months and years down the road ...

Sometimes I just can't understand Tokyo. It is supposed to be one of the world's great business, culture and human centers. An enlightened technical miracle of human development. And in many ways the trains, the safety of the city and the wonderful range o things it offers prove that.

    However.....

The thinking of voters here has far more akin to some backwoods right wing center where people still long for a victory in a war that was lost before it began. Where outsiders (read as foreigners) are suitable for labor and hanging. Where women should be barefoot and in the home where they belong. And where politicians blinded by outdated ideas and backwards thinking win over otherwise competent contenders.

Yes folks, when people say Tokyo is actually a small town, they mean it. A small right wing town with a history of voting in guys who probably have more in common with hood wearing torch riders than modern proper politicians leading other major global cities.

    Sad.

Voters in Tokyo on Sunday elected the political heir of nationalist politician Shintaro Ishihara, rejecting a candidate strongly endorsed by anti-nuclear activists

Another article written as if nuclear stance was the most important issue for many voters. Vast numbers are more worried about their financial situation, and nuclear power itself as a source of energy was also born from financial considerations. Do tell, what were this human rights lawyer candidate's economic policies for Tokyo and what are his economic credentials? (Sound of someone's penny hitting the floor)

Utsunomiya was endorsed by left-leaning parties

And have a look at how many seats the three parties that endorsed him secured - 8, 8 and 2 I think it was.

You have a perfectly valid understanding of Tokyo and the majority of people living here.

So, liberals think the Japanese public morons because they want their nuke plants back on? I thought democracy was about choice and respecting others choices.
