Try reframing this to a celebration of an end to war - any war.

Yes, the billionaire politburo will play the J card to mask their own inadequacy, but grown-ups know better than to take the bait.

We are grown-up, aren't we?

Japan acting like a spoiled child , always complaining......

Japan needs to announce they're reducing their contribution level to the UN. Seriously.

-7 ( +7 / -14 )

The UN's historical roots owe alot to the death and destruction seen in WW2 (a war which Japan played a major in starting). So it's probably inappropriate for Japan to demand that the UN not attend, even if what they're saying about neutrality makes some sense. This is definitely a case where any merit in the message is diminished by the messenger.

If Japan has truly moved on and does not want a return to the days of imperial hygemony, they should not be offended by this parade. After all, isn't the Japan of today different from the one of WW2? Plus, they have a former PM attending.

If Abe was smart, he would have attended to show China that Japan is about peace. He could then use that attendance as diplomatic leverage to show that it is China, not Japan, which doesn't want peace in the region. IF he was smart that is what he should have done.

South Korea is very depending on China on economy. Ban is just another citizen of S Korea. It seems he can't stop attending the China's ceremony for his country.

The event is meant to be a show of strength to the Chinese public as well as to China’s Asian neighbors. His attending means UN admits it.

Japan needs to realize that the UN is still very much the "Allied powers" of ww2, and that Japan is still on the enemy nations list of the SC. She needs to either "know its role" within that organization or "do" something rather than just complain.

A page from Matsuoka's book would be both hilarious and exciting.

Japan signed the WWII surrender documents aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, The United Nations was founded on October 24, 1945. In other words, Japan never fought the UN. In contrast China sent 250,000 troops into the Korean Peninsula in 1950 and killed UN troops from 17 member countries.

OssanAmerica: "Japan needs to announce they're reducing their contribution level to the UN. Seriously."

It would be their choice, but don't complain when they look childish and petty about it, and are further denied a seat since all they do is try and throw money at everything.

Anyway, Japan complains because it's something they don't like, claiming that it's not "neutral" for Ban to attend, but it would somehow be "neutral" to listen to ONE country's objections -- the same country that repressed much of Asia and murdered more than 10 million, committed countless atrocities, and when asked by world bodies to recognize sex slaves says, "It's a domestic issue" or completely deny they did anything wrong altogether? THAT would be neutral?

Suck it up, Japan. Better yet, attend yourself and prove you are truly trying to move forward.

Japan must cut 50% of its annual contribution fund to UN. UN organization is useless which couldn't sort any problems around the world. What UN was doing for war in Middle East and food shortage in Africa? I believe 75% of UN budget went to UN secretary and his UN administration, UN employees’ salary and their expenses. Only 25% of UN budget from donor nations was actually used for UN projects. I have less confident in UN for improvement for poor citizens in poor countries.

Japan should give direct assistance to poor peoples of third world via Japanese NGO but should not give money to Government. Japanese NGO will use Japan Government's fund in agriculture education for local foods producing, clean water for everyone and education for all children in poor African countries. UN has ignored hungry poor peoples in Africa. If UN secretary and UN staffers have reduced 50% of their salary and expenses and then UN can feed and give education to poor hungry women, men and children in Africa.

U.N. rejects Japan's complaint over Ban's China visit.

As well they should. Japan neeeds to grow up and get over all the "victim" mentality. Ban just visited Hiroshima -- his second visit in five years. Didn't hear complaints from Japan then about him being "neutral".

Japan needs to announce they're reducing their contribution level to the UN. Seriously.

Nonsense. The U.S. is the #1 contributor every year to the UN, and the UN thumbs their nose at the U.S. time and time again. You don't condition your support for a body as important as the UN on whether or not you get your way all the time. Even for Japan, that would be a new low in immaturity.

Japan as an ally with USA and supposedly S. Korea needed to protest.

However, with the Secretary General of UN being Korean, and the powerful China just a single border line away, Ban had to go, just to protect both N & S Korea.

However, with this the world shall become much more aware of the "role" China plays in world politics, besides world economy. Countries that must show off their military has two faces. One shows that they can and may become aggressive. The other shows that it is able to defend itself.

The world is aware of what this event is all about.

Well, let's face it, they are never going to get a seat, unless maybe China attacks and loses a war and gets thrown out once and for all. When Japan decides its contribution, that should be the basis.

Anyway, Japan complains because it's something they don't like, claiming that it's not "neutral" for Ban to attend, but it would somehow be "neutral" to listen to ONE country's objections

Let's face it. When Ban decided to attend, he is taking a side. Not attending has more interpretations - he can always say he's busy. In fact, I think you know he's taking a side since more of this paragraph is on justifying his lack of neutrality.

I agree with Ossan and Kazuaki, JP should reduce their contribution to UN. Its a waste of money.

Ban has expressed his intention of becoming South Korea President. His target audience of this action would be SKoreans.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

As some have alluded to Ban is Korean first so it's no brainer that his actions are earmarked for his post U.N. career.

As Ossan briefly mentions, a head of the U.N. which at this stage has a 'cease fire' agreement with Korea People's Army (current North Korea) and People's Volunteer Army (current PLA) and yet he attends this 'show off" parade of the PLA.

Ban has expressed his intention of becoming South Korea President

Where did he do that?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Ban is the current head of the UN so he attends in that role and not as a Korean.

As for his plans after the UN .......

Where did he do that?

Last year, SK's largest opposition party said Ban's aid expressed Ban's intent to be next President, which anouncement was later criticized because it might undermine Park's position.
