Play nice, children. Otherwise go to the corner for a timeout.

Chill the hell out both of you. I'm living in 日本 with my 日本語 wife and I don't want my happy life detroyed by war. How about they half the islands? Or how about we blow them out of the ocean?

Okay, I just talked with a Chinese friend that works here in Japan. He thinks all this island bickering is stupid too. He stated that when he talked to his family back in China a few days ago, they said the riots we are seeing on the news are only a very small portion of the population. Most people dont even care about the island issue.

It's all show.

Nothing serious will come of this, just endless posturing and hollow, scornful statements.

@neversubmit: I agree. I dont think China would ever dare take any actions that would result in ruining their export industry and even result in war. And as far as Japan concerned we know they are all talk but no action.

Hundreds of fishing boats from Taiwan Su-Ao Fishermen Association will go fishing around there under protection of Taiwan coast guard soon. let's see what'll happen.

While not overly worried about things at the diplomatic level, hope what Ringside is hearing is right in that only a small portion of the Chinese population is going all radical over this.

I wish there were more in the Japanese press regarding the basis of the Chinese claim for the Islands. A lot of Japanese think that the Chinese are simply attempting to steal an island that is as Japanese as Kyushu.

Japan has a territorial dispute with South Korea over Takeshima/Dokdo. The Japanese propose letting an international court decide. The South Koreans say no way. The Japanese criticze the South Koreans for their stance.

The Taiwanese and Chinese should make the same proposal to the Japanese regarding Senkaku/Daioyu. The Phillipines could join in as well. They should suggest to Japan that the dispute should be resolved by an international court. Of course, that would cause Gov. Ishihara, etc. to have a kanipshin bubbula and the Japanese would say no way making them no better than the South Koreans.

Although a close ally of Japan, Washington has said it will not take sides in the territorial dispute.

Obviously the US has no need for the resources under these islands.

Last month Ishihara said he intends to join a research trip in october and actually step ashore.

And now China has sent to ships to the island to guard it.

So why don't we all start up a "send Ishihara to Senakaku" fund, and make sure we can help him really get on a boat and go there. I can think of no better solution than to see his backside get blown out of the water by the Chinese military boats!!

While I do agree that most are not really familiar with the details of this dispute, honestly don't think the Japanese are as simple minded as you suggest (perhaps "as Japanese as Okinawa" may apply, but certainly not "Kyushu"). Believe most realize the complexity of the matter and doubt that things will ever be in black and white while nonetheless critical of the degree of radical behavior seen at the other end.

I also believe that, once the everyday Japanese is better educated about the details, the sequence of events leading to how things are today, many should agree that for this particular matter the rule of estoppel should apply, which is the exact same logic China is seeking to apply for their other dispute with Vietnam. Not that I believe this matter will be resolved any time soon under this logic however.

For those who want to know more about this dispute, I will recommend you to read the following article written by Koji Taira:

Folks I told ya the yanks are getting ticked off with all this crap!

As for the situation blowing up here, i wonder how much has to do with China's leadership change, and needing to put on a show of force to its population?

Japan is denied action on this issue-any aggression from Japan to China will stymy the US in it's defense of Japan. China knows this and will not make the first move although this strategy gives China plenty of rope to lash Japan with......

Your friend was definitely downplaying it, perhaps because he works in Japan and wants to pretend things aren't that bad. The reality is that if you use any Chinese social media it's obvious that the overwhelming majority of Chinese are very angry. A line I see very often is that they want to see a "Tokyo Massacre" and other calls for violence. Make no mistake, the Chinese people want blood and it's scary.

Happened to travel to Nanjing for business last month where Japanese massacred 300,000 back in 1930s but this was just part of what Japanese troops did in Asia during WWII, and if you ask Japanese my age (20s-30s), they "don't know" about this, not surprising as some right wing politicians said the Nanjing Massacre never happaned. Chinese people's anger is understandable over any territory dispute with Japan. However, the Senkaku/Diaoyu issue is very complex, happening amidst top-level power reshuffles, energy shortage and economic crisis. We cannot forget but we can forgive and love, world peace.

Now Japanese peoples are less patriotic and country is weaker now. I'm not surprise by neighbor countries want to intimidate weak Japan. Communist Chinese Government will use past for as bargain tool with Japan and play politic game with its peoples. South Korea Presidential election is coming on 19 December 2012. So President Lee Myung-bak is using past and Island dispute with Japan as his game plan for coming Presidential Election in end of the year. Whatever Japanese Government and peoples are trying to be nice but both countries are too hostile to Japanese Government and peoples. Japanese Government and Company should avoid business investment in country like China and South Korea. Japan needs nuclear weapon for self protection. Japan must have strong military for to protect its sovereign territory but not bully to other country. Japan should not rely everything on American. North Korea has Nuclear Weapon and China has Nuclear Weapon and world largest army. No one guaranty those Communist states will not attack on Japan. Japanese peoples and politicians need to wake up and do the right thing. Japan needs political reform and as well as fix term for Prime Minister.

Divide then conquer is typical of US foreign policy. A unified Korea and peaceful Japan - China relations is the last thing they want.

The Americans studied "Art of War" better than the Chinese and the Japanese, what a shame.
