Exactly, this guy has more sense than the other ignoramuses that continually bring in ridiculous arguments as to why Japan should not be on the security council. Japan has done eons more to further the spirit of this council than many of those on the council. Anyone that doesn't think Japan belongs on the council is a bunch of sour grapes.

rjd, well anyone can say anything about anything...doesn't mean it's the truth

rjd: Uganda suddenly saying 'b-b-b-b-ut it's not because of aid' not only indicates it's getting aid from Japan, but also proves that any other country that supports Japan getting a seat is doing so strictly because of aid.

Japan does not deserve a seat... bottom line.

"but also proves that any other country that supports Japan getting a seat is doing so strictly because of aid."

How much aid is the UK getting from Japan? Or Germany, France, Canada, etc? None that I've heard of.

"Japan does not deserve a seat... bottom line."

Maybe if France, the UK, US, Russia and China don't. But if they do then Japan certainly does along with Germany, India and Brazil.

Japan clearly deserves to be a Perm member of the UNSC and this article should shut up all those who constantly harp about such support being "bought" by Japan. Whether Japan "deserves" a seat is a matter of opinion, but what is fact is that it certainly deserves it more than some other current members, particularly the PRC. It is not only in Japan's interest but in the U.S. interest as well, and as such the only gripes you ever hear against Japan becomming a Perm member are from the Pro-China and Anti-US crowd, very often one and the same.

I think Ugandan President is more serious and sincere than Japan, reason? Japan is not interested in UNSC seat with or without aid.

It's sad to see the supporters of Japan getting a seat coming on here and begging for it. Sure, other countries must also get in line when it comes to supporting human rights, but Japan has a long history of denying the truth, and wanting world wide recognition at the same time.

Again, Japan does not deserve a seat, regardless of how much money they pour into other countries and pretend it's for 'humanitarian' purposes.

  • realist at 01:47 PM JST - 2nd June

Japan does not deserve a seat on the UN Security Council - but Germany does. Why? Because Germany has acknowledged its vile past and repented of it, while Japan tries to ddeny its past and cover it up.

  • realist at 01:48 PM JST - 2nd June

Oh yes - and like smithinnjapan rightly points out above - another reason for the denial of a Security Council seat for Japan is because of the abuses of human rights in this country. China should also not have a seat for the same reasons.

  • OssanULTRA at 12:03 AM JST - 3rd June

It's sad to see all the usual Japan haters come on here and begging for it. They gather when some coutry is against Japan becomming a member and they gather when, as in this case, a country isa for it. Either way the comment is always the "Japan doesn't deserve it" mindless chant.

  • GrouchyGaijin at 07:03 AM JST - 3rd June

Well said, realist, "Japan does not deserve a seat on the UN Security Council - but Germany does. Why? Because Germany has acknowledged its vile past and repented of it, while Japan tries to deny its past and cover it up." The day Taro Aso apologizes in person for Nanking, in Nanking, maybe it is time to consider giving thought to a UNSC seat for Japan. Maybe. Just imagine Japan on the UNSC, endless dithering about everything, just like Nagata-cho. THAT the world can do without.

  • LFRAgain at 07:25 PM JST - 6th June

Strictly speaking, I can't see any particular reason why Japan is not suited for the UNSC. Japan isn't any better or worse than current members, although I could say that Japan does have a bit of an advantage in being a country that not only has a "peace" clause written into its constitution, but actually obeys it, despite the vigorous efforts of the conservative right in Japan. The bottom line is that Japan has as much of a right to be on the security council as any of the countries currently on it. If anyone can provide a definitive reason why not, I'd love to hear it. Keep in mind, that reason needs to be provided against the backdrop of any of the sins committed, past or present, by any and ALL of the current council nations.

  • LFRAgain at 07:28 PM JST - 6th June

Okay. So, owning up to a vile past is a condition of UNSC membership? Last I checked, China still defends the invasion of Tibet as an "internal matter," Russia hasn't been rolling out any apologies to the Afghanis, and the US isn't exactly tripping over itself to apologize for the Spanish/American War. So, what is that's so special about Japan apologizing?
