goodDonkey - It is a scam by the Japanese against American Beef. Let the buyer decide not the government.

Japanese Buys have decided if you talk to most they say ban US Beef. They either eat Australian Beef or Japanese Beef and would not touch US Beef in a fit of Sundays.

I have been in Japan for 6 years and I do not know any one that eats US Beef, they all eat SAFE Australian Beef or Japanese Beef.

Time for a TOTAL BAN on US beef, it is not needed in Japan.

I make and Sell Aussie Meat Pies and only use Aussie Beef as I do not want to kill my customers with US BSE infected Beef.

I would prefer US beef that meets Japan's standards to the Australian beef I'm able to buy in Japan, which is tough, and far from delicious. Possibly better Australian beef is sold in other areas (I'm sure Australia, like the US, has better beef as well), but what I get in my area of Japan..well, maybe if you cook it long enough you could make a stew or something... The point is that the US beef industry is shooting itself in the foot by not meeting Japan's requirements, something they could easily do. It's bad for business, and hurts the US business reputation as well, in my opinion.

GoodDonkey made an opening for me, so I will chime in. What is up with American restaurants saying "Wagyu from Oregon" and "Genuine Kobe Beef from Idaho"? I recently have seen restaurants in the US grinding this stuff up and putting it in hamburgers. Riiight. I guess nobody will question that anymore than the fact that every single Japanese restaurant in the US is owned by Koreans or Chinese.

I want the Japanese government to do all it can to make food imports safe. I have stopped feeling sorry for US beef producers because this is like, what, the third or fourth go-round? Why is sending crummy food to Japanese markets apparently the only way that food processing companies can make money these days?

Lamborghini: exactly. BTW. BSE is not the biggest problem, the hormones in U.S. beef are.

Americans eat 10 times more beef 10 times more often then Japanese people do and have had like 3 cases of mad cow in the last 20 years. The cases involving MCD were cows from Canada however. This is nothing but protectionism. Most the aussie beef farms are owned by Japanese businesses also to boot. I am quite sure that Japanese people would like to pay less then 30 bucks a stake. When they do go to the American places, I.E. the bases and facilities in Japan they eat the hell out of American products including stakes.

Farmboy, my wife tried to give US Beef to her dog and even the dog refused to eat the rubbish, but it will eat Aussie and Japanese beef without problems, so it goes to show that even Japanese Dogs know US Beef is rubbish and should not be eaten.

If the Beef you are buying is tough then I can say it is US Beef labeled Aussie Beef. There was a shop in Chiba claiming to sell Aussie Beef, but it was discovered that the beef was in fact US Beef. No one was buying the US Beef so the shop decided to place new labels on the packs and sell it as Australian Beef, They of course got caught and got in a lot of trouble.

hworta269, Australian Beef Farms are NOT owned by Japanese, Aussie Beef producers listened to what the Japanese wanted and worked hard to please the Japanese by following what the Japanese wanted.

US Beef industry will not listen to what the Japanese want and instead try to force what the US Beef industry wants on to the Japanese.

If you know anything about business you would know that The customer is always right. The US Beef Industry does not work on that principle, the US Beef Industry thinks it is right and the customers(Japanese) are wrong and needs to be forced to accept what the US Beef Industry wants.

Farmboy: [...] I make and Sell Aussie Meat Pies and only use Aussie Beef >> [...] even Japanese Dogs know US Beef is rubbish and should not be eaten.

LOL! Japanese Dogs are amazing! I'm waiting for new research to show that they not only can tell the difference between U.S. and Australian beef and advise against eating it, but they also are capable of writing poetry, derive equations and whatnot. I wonder, has anyone investigated their refined tastes further with, say, some first-quality juicy whale fillets?

Whatever it is, obviously they can follow logic better than some humans... sadly.

Not everyone would try to sell readers on Australian beef by saying that dogs like it. Certainly this is a novel approach.

A lot of Japanese are also not happy with the restrictions on U.S. beef, which, to this day, has not given one person BSE.

  • JoeBigs at 10:45 PM JST - 25th July

The U.S. interim envoy in Japan said Thursday that Washington is ‘‘not happy’’ as Tokyo has groundlessly continued to restrict U.S. beef imports due to fear of mad cow disease.

With all the mistakes that were made in the last years concerning imports how can the Japanese trust U.S. beef imports.

Tough sh!t. Get used to it USA, UnderinSpectedAgriculture.

JoeBigs: your quote: "how can the Japanese trust U.S. Imports"

Why create hysteria? Do you have any facts on BSE, of number of known people contaminated with this disease in U.S. ? Answer is probably zero.

  • hworta269 at 06:55 PM JST - 29th July

I dont think a single person has died from eating American beef, its all about who owns the farms and not about actual safety. Saying American beef tastes like this and that beef is way better is also absurd. I bet not a single person on this thread could honestly tell you the difference. And dogs eat their own feces so I doubt they refuse any meat whatsoever. When a person is using a house pet to show quality of a food consumed by people then we all know just how far they are sinking to win a debate.
