‘‘Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have made important contributions to >coalition efforts and Japan’s sacrifices will not be forgotten,"

Yes, especially since there really wasn't much self-defense involved.

‘‘Japan is our close friend and strong ally and we appreciate the willingness of the Japanese people to contribute to Iraqi stabilization and reconstruction,’’ said National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

‘‘Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have made important contributions to coalition efforts and Japan’s sacrifices will not be forgotten,’’ he said. ‘‘Japan has played a significant role in Iraq and will continue to be a significant partner in the war on terrorism.’’

Nice statements coming from a U.S. official.

too bad the japanese couldn't look after themselves and tied up other coalition resources to make sure no japanese came under attack. what a pointless gesture and great waste of public funds. the US really does know how the screw up wars.

It's that Article 9. They've gotta get rid of it.

rjd - why, were you expecting them to say "screw Japan for walking out"? They were helping transport troops and supplies into Iraq from Kuwait for the US military - of course they are going to be thanked for the war effort.

Not at all soldave, I just highlighted that U.S. officials and Dubya himself have enough class and decency and honor to thank all coalition partners for their efforts in Iraq and in Afghanistan.

A far cry from the many confused and tortured souls here who seem to let their extreme anti japan bias contradict everything they purport to stand for in this world.

    Fair enough then :)
