Some backroom shenanigans going on, possibly. If some of the Japanese right-wing nut jobs get the urge to assault Obama with apology demands, he can trot out Mr Crowley with a little history lesson on Japanese war crimes.

The out right denial by my host family of the ware crime committed by Japan really shocked me. I couldn't believe they accepted what their teachers told them as so absolute. Bare Foot Gene was even taken out of schools for portraying the Japanese as war criminals. Lets not forget the emperor almost being kidnapped as he tried to surrender or the 600,000 shadow army that was kept in reserve just incase we did invade the main land. Obama and the white house has already made it clear that no apology will be given.

Unfortunately, there are many Japanese who selectively choose to forget their own history.....

Don't blame WH stuffs. They are scared over 90 yrs old people might pass away in Japan's summer weather.

Their memory does not want to go further than Hiroshima, why that atrocity happened is not important only the result, main reason why it is highly possible history does repeat again.

Agreed. Mr Crowley should accompany Obama, to remind Japan of an inconvenient truth: their treatment of POWs. A nearby POW camp was actually obliterated by the atom bombs.

May is not summer.

May is not summer.

Officially no, but temperatures can get to around 30. Harder going for someone that age. It also comes back to that old argument recently: Dress for the weather, not the season.
