I voted other, the overpriced tickets to fly overseas in cattle class, especially to asia. Even for a small sized person it is so cramped and uncomfortable blood clots form in the legs.
i voted other, too. you buy your ticket and then they keep asking for more and more money for gas. then we found out that code share airlines were charging double.
Whenever I've flown, I've never actually had any problems with the airlines themselves. What annoys me most is the other passengers. The last time I flew, there was a woman next to me with far too much carry-on baggage and so I had to put mine under the seat, there was a guy sitting near the window who insisted on keeping the blind open for the whole flight and some woman behind me who kept laughing hysterically at the in-flight entertainment. At least you get compensation for lost luggage!
If they lose you luggage they'll pay for clothes and toiletries. I only minded it the time I was on my way to a wedding and the bag didn't show up until the morning of the wedding.
Lost luggage and Departure delays probably have little to do with the actual airline and rather the airport. Long lines at check-in counters and Overbooking are to do with the actual system of the airline + airport. Rude or indifferent flight attendants are the one thing that involves direct human interaction and they would also be the ones to calm you down if there was a delay or you lost your luggage. Basically the one thing that should always be the best is customer service since it will stand out the most. Bad food, long delays will not be memorable, but a crappy flight attendant will really make your day unforgettable and something to tell your friends about.
Inconsiderate passengers take the cake. This includes people who carry cups of piping hot Starbucks coffee down the aisle while struggling with kids and/or a load of carry-on baggage. It's thoughtless, tacky and probably costs the industry a fortune in replacing seat cushions and carpeting due to spills.
The worst experience was having my luggage missing (later found out it was stolen by the baggage handlers) on vacation in Canada. I had to buy everything that I had lost which was paid by the flight company later but took 4 days after my lost luggage. That experience was something I would never want to experience again. I can deal with a lot of other things but lost luggage(or stolen) is not a good feeling.
I also don't like some people on flights. Knowing that you will only be around those people for a short period of time is the good part. I've had bad experiences with other people on flights but I get over it pretty quickly thanks to my Zune, Nintendo DS, and mass amounts of magazines.

I complained about only getting a 15 dollar voucher for dinner at the airport Hilton in Boston, where 15 dollars buys you shrimp cocktail, if that. They had put me up at the Hilton after mechanical failure on United. The airline said that was their limit, but I pressed them, and they gave me a 150 dollar travel voucher, which I passed on to my mom. Polite persistence pays off.

Actually I'm a Cabin attendant for a Japanese airline.
I can understand that all the problems above can irritate a customer.
The major problem is that, we C/A's are the only people who are in front of you for a long time.
Because we represant the company, passengers want answers and solutions from us.
I will do my best to find answers. But most of the times solutions can be done only by physical actions.
That's the major problem. We are in a airplane stuck for hours with no possibilities to connect with anyone.
So because of that claustrophobia situation everyone gets nervous.
I'm a young C/A so I'm still trying to understand but the older's one can't take it anymore.
Airplane are flying buses for many passengers. But the difference is the safety matters.
In a plane our first true goal is to bring you safely from A to B.
But our management only use the flying dream advertisement to have passengers into our flights.
So the customers don't see anymore the C/A's as someone who can help them in case of troubles, but only as the Orange juice guys.
So when we have the safety jobs to do we can't be the nice C/A's anymore.
We have rules for safety. If we don't follow those rules and one passengers gets hurt, First the passenger will sue the company. But if the company realise that we didn't follow the rules they will let us in our "shit".
So C/A's will be the only ones to pay the bill for your pain.
Please understand why we can't be nice with the passenger who don't want to move his luggage from the exit door.
I know flying is scary, very long, boring, expensive. That's why most of them are angry.
So please relax, drink only water, ask for a eyemask, listen to your favorite music, or put the ear plug, then you will have a good flight.

These kids from Japan had their reading light on for the entire 12 hour trip. And the grandfather kept on checking his luggage in the over head bend for a total of 15 times. I didn't get a choice of dinner. I just got " Here ! " What is "here "? Hamburg Steak and potatoes or pasta ?

Unless you were half dead and unable to move, good manners dictate that you throw away the sick bag yourself. Yes, the flight attendant didn't react very nicely, but she's not there to spoon-feed you and wipe your backside.

Noisy babies and children. Infact, anyone taking children on an airplane should have to pay at least the double fare for their children so the people sitting in their proximity can receive a reduction in their fare. It's the least airline companies could do to compensate the victims.
Others: Coach seats seeming to get smaller and smaller, and less service on planes these days too. Many domestic flights in the US you have to buy your own food now.
The old 747's have some of the worst coach pitch. Both JAL and Northwest have poor coach pitch on the 744. However, on the newer A330s that Northwest flies to NRT there's a bit more room.
For the most part the flight/cabin attendants are pretty good. Though I admit that in the last couple years I've only flown first and business class. Service tends to be way more attentive and the meals/booze is way better on JAL/ANA. Terminal and Gate Agents tend to be the weak link for me however no matter what airline I'm on.
JAL and ANA blown US airlines away when it comes to service and amenities in the business and first class cabins. The only thing I wish was that the JAL and ANA Flight Attendants weren't so shy about speaking English.

Well, that and the mandatory AARP membership (American Association for Retired People). All 55 and older, plus their service is not really that good. And I fly primarily business class. When I fly coach, their vocabulary is more than one word. Two: Chicken or beef.
I say the US airlines are the worst. At least on the international flights. Inside the US, Skywest (a small regional airline based out of Salt Lake City, Utah) is by far the best. The flight crew is pleasant, the pilots are courteous, and talk quite a bit about the journey. If you are flying on United on the west coast of the US, chances are you are on one of their planes.
Oh, I forgot the really big pet peeve of mine: People that do not comprehend what the "one carry on item and one personal item" definition is. I fly with a small backpack. It holds a laptop, some magazines, and my business papers. Maybe 46x38x20 cm. It can fit anywhere (even overhead on a small turboprop). I see a lot of passengers with one roll on (that does not fit on a 777 overhead), a duffel bag, a purse/computer bag, then the obligatory duty free bags. Plus lunch/Starsucks that has to be slurped/eaten before we get off the ground. Oh, and don't get me started on people who do not fit into one seat, and they have to "ooze" over onto my seat. GRRRRRR.... And I fly next week to the US. Lovely.

Bowing, smiling, great-looking, polite, etc, all displayed all the time by the Japanese. Western usually: older, grumpier, rude, apathic, overweight, bang into your shoulder with their trey-cart and never bother to apologize, this list goes on...
In the (pre-war) Imperial flying boats the passengers could wander up and down stairs, go to the dining room or the lounge, and even have their own cabins to change for dinner, sleep, etc., I believe. Flights to South Africa would stop on Lake Victoria to let the passengers enjoy the scenery. A different pace of life.

Now it's hell. Constant body and luggage checks, pressure selling, bad air, cramped conditions, fiddly paperwork, restricted movements. Terrorists in their mistaken idealism have guaranteed that everyone's lives are a misery. Sometimes I imagine that convicted criminals could be condemned to fly constantly round the world for a period of several days. That would drive them mad. They might even make the resolve to go straight. Much, much worse than prison.
The blatant rudeness I have experienced by KLM staff pales by comparison.
Being put next to fat and obese people when I am traveling alone. I am thin and invariably get shoved between some fat passengers who overflow their seats since two fatties often can't fit side-by-side in economy class seats.
They should be charged by weight and have a separate section with larger seats.

The answer is to travel first or business class. ,aybe afew bucks more, but it sure is worth it.
