Airline tickets and landing/departure gates are a controlled monopoly. When any airline ticket from USA to Japan is within a few 100 yen of any other airline, then everyone knows the airlines are the masters. The only way to reduce tickets is to provide more airports and more access. TSA needs to go bye-bye too. It is just a false sense of security and a BIG inconvenience. Where does one apply for an ID implant so that he or she can go through a "Green" lane for departures?
Asian carriers are generally great, except that eventhough I always request a seat next to a handsome Asian guy, I often get a seat next to another Caucasian. US airlines have only given me bad experiences, I will never fly them again.
In terms of the pilots skill, all are great. The safety of each aircraft, no complaints (except Russian airlines). I dont even mind the added security, as its a sign of the times. Yet my gripe is with the cranky geriatric flight attendants on UA and NWA whose butts can barely squeeze between the seats. I`ll take the airport hassle and a polite asian based airline anyday, thank you.
Generally speaking, I believe service is getting better from year to year. And I agree with Mark_McCracken on the fact that the service of Asian companies are the best.I would add that it is difficult to beat them, because the art of service is naturally acquired in Asia, it's innate.
Asian service is good but impersonal, best service by far Air New Zealand. Wine leaves all others for dead and friendly air crew. After that Korean Air. JAL, Cathay, SA are good if compared to crappy US standards but cold.
Airlines are a criminal organization with a license to operate. Who else can add $300-400 to the advertised price? And the food offered is barely palatable. I take my own food onto the plane now.
Some channel did a study and found that a typical NYC-LA flight actually only profits a few hundred $$ per flight, and the longer the plane stays on the ground, the more they lose money (ergo they gotta keep the plane on the air as often as possible). The margin between profiting or taking a loss isn't really all that much. I imagine it's not too different with all flights. Airlines have to improve their business models to get away from living so close between staying in business or going in debt.
They are too expensive. At roughly a thousand bucks to fly from Japan-America, I'd expect to be treated like a god. The price does NOT reflect the service, so I would say that it's bad service.

Until the TSA started to bodyscan and reach into your pants I was generally happy. Japan airlines cost more, but you also get better service.

Generally? Yes, but only because I have flown a variety of airlines, including many based in Asia, which have far better service than United.

Agree with Mark McCracken. Generally I've been pleased with SQ, NH and CX, et. al. Asian carriers.
UA, AA, DL, etc., all blow.

Agree with Mark McCracken except I would elaborate but still in general: Asian, then European(except BA), then American airlines last choice.
