Somedays I don't bother to turn on my cell phone.

    Very easily and often do.

Only carry the phone so that I can contact someone in case of an emergency or that my son can contact me when he is out playing with his buddies.

Due to that very few people have my number and the phone hardly ever gets used.

Have had a mobile for a long time, 15 plus years, and have had the same number for the last 12 years (new phones while keeping the old number) so a great many people have that number. Granted I can never remember it because the phone is always with me and I have never had occasion to call myself, so forget the number. I can actually remember the last two occasions I forgot to take my phone out with me, because they are the only two occasions I have ever forgotten it. The only time I actually dislike having it with me is when I get a call outside the country and some fool wants to chat without realising that they are chatting at my expense because they only pay the national change, I get the international bit. Aside from that I really don’t understand all this fuss some people make about not wanting to be in contact, nobody puts a gun to your head, if you don’t like it don’t have a phone. There’s no need to turn it into some kind sociological drama.

If it were simply for making calls and emails, yes. However, with today's phones, and especially the iPhone, it can be used as a personal planner, calendar, alarm, games, notes, internet, for reading, calculator, photo album, IC recorder, navigation system, study tool, etc. Of course, the obvious phone and email functions apply.

Sure, you could do without it for a day, I think, but rather than simply 'Could you go without using your cell phone for a day' you need to ask, "Could you go without emailing, calling, watching TV, movies, checking your day planner, playing video games, reading the news, checking the internet, etc., for a day?"

I agree with smithinjapan. Yes, I an go without a cell phone for calls, but then I need a pocket clock or a wrist watch with alarm and calendar and read news on the internet when I am eating (I know bad manners). If we can replace the credit card, keys and ID with the cell phone, then is going immpossible dont carry one. But until then is like an electronic version of the swiss army knife. I can live without one, but I like having one. Just like cars.

Nothing FORCES me to use my phone, but I had to vote no because I couldn't get everything done that I would want to without it.

Farmboy - with you. Don't have one, never had one, life is beautiful.Yes, I can go for days without it.

have 1, but just for family emergency's and the occasional contact with friend. would be fine w/out it. my wife, japanese, on the other hand, couldn't go an hour w/out. i think the big difference is that the japanese use it for email & internet as well, whereas most foreigners here use a computer for net & mail. so, an interesting question would be "could you go a day w/out using your computer?"

Without using it for anything? Clock, calendar, calculator, weather forecasts, web connection, etc. Maybe if I was really sick or in a coma.

Without using it as a phone? Yeah, sure.

I used to rely a LOT on my cell-phone(both private & Company).

Back than I was on 24/7 call-outs for computer probs(clients were banks, etc). Later on I was still on the electronic leash from the company due to a lot of business travels.

Since I quit the Industry I found that I can without a lot of those functions. Always carried a watch, schedule is easy enough to remember, etc.

I found that my quality of life has improved since I cut myself off from most of the electronic gadgets and did my family life.

As I said above and was mentioned by others the Cell-phone now is for emergencies mostly.

So in addition to going without a cell, I can also happily go without my computer, etc for days on end(and did so recently for 17days/very quiet & relaxing holiday).

I could go without making phone calls. I use my cellphone as a calculator, as a watch, and as a calendar.

I could two days without one, but those two days would need to be Saturday and Sunday. Damn the pressure of work!

I gave up cell phones years ago due to the no privacy factor and everyone expects you to answer your call or message right away, I prefer to just be left alone!

I treat the mobile much the same way I do meeting people in the street, I don’t ignore them even if they are not the person I would most wish to meet. If there is a delay in my own life and I need to tell somebody I will be late I can. I’m simply not interested by all the extra junk that phone companies have added to the mobile, it is a phone as far as I’m concerned and nothing more. As for the people above who seem to hate them, why such extreme thinking? Switch it on and off as YOU need, do you answer you door or house phone lie a robot? The mobile is only addictive if YOU let it be, you bought it you control it, it is you that are your own problem, not the mobile.

Had one my first 2 years here because it was the thing to do, now in the last 6 years I find I can take more trips oversees and fewer unwanted interruptions. A money saver for sure. Cell phones are a friggin' waste.

Have not had a land line in 10 years. I could probably go a day without my cell, but I don't know why I would.

While on a visit to Tohoku five years ago I accidentally dropped mine into a place whose mention here would almost certainly result in this post's removal. Decided it wasn't worth the hassle, cancelled the account and have lived happily ever after without one.

I hate talking on them but necessary for work & can take a few personal calls. Now that I can do my biz emails it makes it easy to go to Tokyo & leave the laptop sometimes & I can work while tending my veggie patch or when out doing other stuff.

Having said that every once in a while I forget it at home when I head out & those are great days! Till I get back that is haha

I am like Zybster & a few others in that I have never had one or need to use such a 'phone.

At gun club executive meetings, at the start of the season, the various phones are making noises & now they have been toned down, but a few feel they need to contact someone during the meeting, why I do not know for the have a normal telephone when back home.

Also it is a bit disturbing when my home phone starts to ring only no one answers for it is usually someone setting up calls of their new cellular to the various people they will or might call in the next month of so.

I would love to go for a day without using my cellphone at all. But I just couldn't do that, it's my main way of keeping in touch with my long distance girlfriend.

95% of my cellphone usage is for email rather than text/calls.

I spent 9days without my iPhone and I felt as I had no arms. Lately I bought an amazing case for my mobile phone from www.xcase.jp and have no plans to live without it.
