No I don't feel safer. But I'm aware that if something was to happen to me or someone else, maybe these eyes will capture it. < :-)

    "Safer" ... from WHOM ???

Street criminals, maybe - but who is watching the watchers ... and to what sinister uses can they put all this video coverage ?

A couple of guards with AK47s or the equivalent would though. Cameras are only good for assisting the investigation into tracking down the culprit after the act. Which is too late.

Ugh I miscast my vote to "yes" xD so just add 1 to the "No" section. It doesn't make me feel safer, but it does give me the feeling that should anyone commit a crime in view of the camera it gives law enforcement a better idea of what happened and who/what to look for and a much higher chance of them being caught.

I do because I think the presence of a camera deters more people from committing crimes. It doesn't work 100% but certainly deters many.

have you ever seen footage from a cam, HORRID. cant recognize anything. As bonestdictator said it will give the law enforcement a better I idea of what happened but it wont make the area safer.

I had my wallet stolen at a bank and they refused to let me see the surveillance video.

Is this question in general or for Japan? Japan is already one of the safest countries on the planet, so I for one, would like Big Brother's eyes to look elsewhere.

It's an urban myth that surveillance cameras deter crime. You may feel safer, but statistics from all over the world show in fact you are not.

Some heinous crimes have actually been stimulated by surveillance cameras because the criminals were counting on a large audience. While they may not be statistically relevant just as so many things reported by the mass media, what does that do to your safety feelings?

NO at least not in Japan because I highly doubt even if something happens and they have it on tape they would even know how to use it or have the proper equipment to use it.

I am more afraid of my personal info being leaked by some government department with one of those 150,000 computers still running Windows 2000 with little or no security or support because they claim they don't have the budget to change them!

Street crime is not that serious problem in Japan. From the "24 Hours Police at Work" programmes they're always showing, it would seem security cameras in stores seem to be catching lots of shoplifters. Most of them are old ladies.

    I say YES.

I think that a few people like Japanese mafia(Yakuza) or someone evil never hesitate to commit criminals. We cannot feel safe if those live nearby.

But Almost all of people hesitates to do that under surveillance cameras.

Totally, we should install surveillance cameras in those places.

i would think that most people don't even realize where the cameras are, so can't have any more feeling of security.

    At night time yes...because I'm a man.

I always assume no one is actually watching and that the only reason is for the post-crime investigation.

I said yes, but hesitantly. I think at stations, particularly on platforms, they may help. I don't think so of streets. I'm not saying they make things THAT much safer, and they don't really seem to deter any of the spur of the moment stuff that grips people here when they snap, but the fact is that some people will try to avoid a camera (any camera) and doing something in front of it.

The only problem that I have with a lot of cameras is that a lot of them are actually not set up (in buildings and streets). There are a number in my area with absolutely no wires connected to them (and they are NOT wireless, as they would still require power).

I hope that tthe perverts behind the cameras can really do their jobs and don't fall alseep.

The statistics state that the average person is filmed around 40 times a day although, it doesn't seem to be doing much to stop crimes. And, surveillance cameras footage is rarely any good for identifying criminals. Therefor, it has to be a 'NO' vote.

There are a LOT of cameras that we don't see, that will also help in a crime investigation. Like inside ATM's, etc.

Do those cameras prevent Crime - NO. Do they act as a deterent - Yes, for the opportunist small-time criminal/Person straying.

So the answer has to be a Yes/NO.
