If I recall correctly, "slander" refers to the spoken word, "libel" refers to the written word. So I'd have to say No to that one. Bullying - with the security options availble, you can block who is being an ass. So again, No.

I voted after I wrote the above post - I'm surprised to see the majority vote so far is for the Ayes. Why? FB just gives you more opportunity to find out the crappy things people are saying about you, but they'd be badmouthing you anyway, right? Just now you'll leanr why your ears are burning. If you allow a Friend to bully you on FB and do nothing about it...Do something! Just UnFriend them!

    Are rhetorical questions even necessary?

The question is poorly worded. Communication on networking sites is primarily in writing, so slander is less likely than libel. So "no" to slander. Being bullied? I vote "yes". The question asks, "bullied or slandered", not "bullied and slandered" so I vote "yes". The poor wording of the question makes the voting results meaningless.

If you are 10 to 15 years old I write absolutely everything happening to you and if all your friends are 10 years old too, then I would say yes.

I also voted "NO" all 256 friends I have are people I have worked/ partied/ gone to school with, etc. I know all of them personally. I do not expect them to bad mouth me. If they did, obviously they are not a friend and get deleted. Plus all my privacy settings are set where people I dont know cant find or contact me.

Do social networking sites such as Facebook make it easier for people to be bullied or slandered?

That is such a loaded question. Of course any additional communication medium makes it easier to bully or slander. Maybe we should go back to cave paintings, minimum bully risk right there.

Kids can be really mean, especially when they zero in on somebody. Take the case of Phoebe Prince, the girl from Ireland who hanged herself after vicious bullying in the state of Massachusetts. The bullying in her case took place at school, on the way home from school and through facebook. Another case that comes to mind, but not involving facebook was the gay Rutger's student who killed himself after his intimate time with his partner was broadcast on the Internet.

I'm not sure how the Internet should be regulated as far as the right to privacy is concerned, but the Internet can really make life more of a living hell for these unfortunate kids who have a bull's eye target on them 24/7.

    Anyway, it's really sad.

Never did understand that Facebook thing. People sending you plants, drinks, poking me? WHAT?!?!? Poking sounds like bullying. Can you send a "punch' back?

@ Maria I agree. facebook doesnt force you to slander someone. IF you are going to talk $%$% about someone you are going to do it anyway. It will help slander spread but that isnt what the poll is about.

Woes exist everywhere, even when you go to any public place. Same thing for facebook and 500 million facebook people.

I think, facebook is the future, for communications and education. Its a place, where people can bring all the best of internet, for healthy progress among facebook friends.

If there is woes,it easy for users,to just block this facebook woes.

The young users, really are too young,to use facebook . It is like how new drivers, use cars.

Certainly new drivers tend to make more mistakes driving ,than older experienced drivers in facebook.

IMHO, facebook will die as communications, etc change.

Been on the net from the old BBS days(way before World Wide Web came around)and seen many changes involving forums, IM, etc.

Most of the stuff like ebay, facebook, etc are dying because the owners get hooked on the money and make decisions to increase profits that will at the same time drive users away.

Just look at Google and how they have changed, ditto for Apple, Skype, etc. All good products but in the end the company kills it for profits.

I got banned from Facebook, but decided not to return, like many other devoted fans of the social network site have done secretly.

My decision was justified with recent news of the insecurity concerns regarding applications.

I'd never go back to Facebook mainly because they ban you much like Iran mistreats its Azeri minorities -- they steal your personal data but subject you to a trial in which you are guilty but no evidence is presented to you. Rather they based confirmation of the ban by what you admit to; if you vehemently deny it, perhaps you might be allowed back.

However, they demand you be more sociable and stop objecting to their continual objectification of women and strict partiarchalism that only has the veneer of political correctness.

Do not forget that its creator is socially inept, and probably more socially isolated than he believes. I don't know whether it is recreational drug use or what, but their rules are often inflexible when you don't toe their line yet lax if you are a criminal and have paid for extra credits for games.

It is at best a plutocracy -- only the affluent members get away with murder.

@Zenny11 I aprecaite you are old, but a good company will change with the times to continue making profits. and Google, ebay, and facebook are all doing better than ever. your logic makes no sense. A company wants money so they will fade away. The people who started ebay and Google are brilliant. I think they can think a little further than tomorrows profit margins. Facebook MAY fade away, but I guarantee you the man, and the money made from face book will be behind some other venture.

Maybe it's about showing face, and not just throwing somebodies words around.

  • 0

    Monkeyz

It's a lot easier to say nasty things about someone if you don't have to do it to their face. You and all your friends can say whatever trash you want to someone, but then at school pretend nothing has happened and simply ignore your target. Then no one is any the wiser unless the target has told someone.

I'm quite glad that these sites didn't take off til I was in college.

Some regulations are needed. Free Speeches on the online network should NOT be abused for wrong purpose.
