No. Same old, same old.

PTbot: better Han the gov't's #1 choice, though.

She is the first female governor of Tokyo and you can bet she will be hounded and scritinised by the old boy's club. Sadly, I can't see her staying in this position for very long.

Well she deserves a chance

No. She is about as right-wing nationalistic and hawkish as they come, and is likely to act similarly to Shintaro Ishihara as Tokyo governor. Very bad for Japan's international community, and for Tokyo's reputation on the worldwide stage.

She belongs to the Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform (新しい歴史教科書をつくる会) which aims to teach Japanese youth "correct history" about WWII. Also, she is (was?) a member of the Association of Diet Members for Worshiping at Yasukuni Shrine Together (みんなで靖国神社に参拝する議員の会), and serves as a Vice Secretary General of Nippon Kaigi."

@Sensato

All of what you write is interesting. I am at odds with here on the textbook reform issue. As a Tokyo resident I am curious as to why you say she will be very bad for Japan's international community.

Sensato

You are not being fair or objective. For one thing, the Tokyo governor does not decide what goes in history textbooks. Besides, she hasn't even been in the job one day, I think she deserves a chance to show us what she can do before you start posting your unfounded bias. Maybe one year from now, we'll all have different opinions.

No one knows it. Wait and see for a while.

Just another Abe puppet.

Yawn . . .

She strikes me as a right-wing revisionist nutter, but she is a woman and in this country, that has to be a positive. The country is about 50 years behind the West on that score.

I won't be the first person to say this, but it's sad that Japanese can be educated overseas and still return to Japan as ultraconservative adherents of the cult of Nippon. It sounds like this is not that uncommon for elite Japanese. Studying abroad does little to broaden their horizons.

No.

I accidently pressed the "Yes" vote which was actually supposed to be the "I don't know" vote. I may be biased, but I think women in leadership positions of politics would do more for Japan than the oyaji's have been. Besides working mothers and women need more support. It may just be governor of Tokyo, but it's a start to wider political change. Hope she does a better job than the usual candidates.

Let's just give Ms. Koike a chance. She is Tokyo's first lady tochiji after all!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Well, I voted for Torigoe. Koike can't be too far to the right because those people believe that a woman should be in the home having children. If you want to know what the new history textbooks that she supports will be like, go to Kinokuniya Bookstore in Shinjuku, first floor magazines toward the back, and look at the history magazines. There are several showing the great things Japan did during WWII, and it is right on the front cover. You can't miss it. Never seen that before. You know, the Japan "won by loosing" line. Got Europea Imperialists out of Asia. This is no longer a view in the closet.

Who knows? She defied her Liberal Democratic stance in favor of an independent nomination! Maybe shes worse than Yoichi Masuzoe! Shes got quite a few things to straighten up before ungoing another difficult task of keeping her political visons realistic and achievable! But shes brave to run as an independent:) Compared to mogul Abes plan that has see an usurp of support following his food tax hike postponement. Hes playing his cards on the japanese economy and only thinking of becoming the longest serving japanese prime minister after Hirobumi! His Abenomics have failed! Japanese debt is at a record 280% of GDP! Postponing the food tax hike and use even more fiscal stimilus wont resolve anything+ an increased defense budget when they need it the least. And despite all this, they still vote for Abe and his Abenomics! Its almost like Abes the new Hitler in Asia; "Trust my fiscal policy and i will surely bring Japan out of depression;)" His final achievement would probably be to ressurect the Japanese Empire from it`s peak. Probably seeking to invade China and reclaim the Kurils from Russia! Well Abe has managed against all odds to actually achieve a 2/3 majority in both Upper and Lower houses!

Coming back to this poll, I find it really intriguing how the percentages are almost the exact same.

I was just thinking the same thing. This is the closest I've ever seen a poll here that included a "I don't know" response.
