My cell phone has email, a still camera, movie camera, TV and web browsing. I have no idea if it is a "Feature phone" or a "Smartphone", and I don't particularly care.
Tbe moment there is a smart phone with IC Chip equipped smart phone capable of Suica and Edy, then I will be a happy smart phone user. Until then, it's my dumb phone: 4 year old au crap, which is still kicking though...
I have a computer connected to the Internet. I have a telephone (land line). That's plenty for me, and anything more than that is a useless indulgence and waste of money.
Landline? haha thats very quaint I have a skype-in 050 number. Makes my pc/skype the "landline".
Smart phones are the way forward - the gps and touch screen coupled with APPS are the huge benefit of smart phones. I seldom ever use the phone function an my phone, I use it daily for all the awesome tools that are on it: the cycle computer , cardio training monitor, the kanji flash cards, the kanji writer, dictionary, Japanese Highway traffic condition, kindle, chess, pdf reader, reading news on the train, Dictaphone, music player, google maps - navigation and more. Its an extremely handy multi purpose tool that's in my pocket that does the job of dozens of expensive limited purpose tools.
To each their own, if you are happy with flint when a Leatherman multi-purpose tool is available then when more can one say?
I'm working mostly at home, where I have both a landline and a computer, so why would I need a cell phone? Everybody knows my mail address, lots of apps and a bigger monitor on my computer, freedom to talk for cheaper either on landline or for next to nothing on Skype, and freedom from being bothered when I'm away or don't want to be available. There are those few times per year when I think a cell phone might be useful, but not enough to justify actual buying it. So, both life of work and fun WITHOUT a cell phone of any kind is still possible in this day and age.
I use a mobile phone, but I wouldn't call it smart and I presume it's not what tech-savvy folk would consider a feature phone (despite having a camera and tv and lots of other useless features), so what am I supposed to vote? Neither?
I think the problem with this survey is people who don't really care about phones don't understand the question.
I can seldom walk down the street without seeing at least one Japanese parent completely disregarding their small child while they tap out messages on their device; or a cyclist pedaling unsteadily down the street while trying to do something with his phone; or a pedestrian holding up traffic as he or she strolls across an intersection while in the midst of a game. Mobile phones have made meiwaku fashionable. I can't think of a single good thing they have done for humanity. They're also a significant drain on household budgets. The overseas vacation I'm planning in the near future will be paid for mostly with the funds I didn't waste on one of these idiotic and completely unnecessary toys.
The bills for the various new gadgets that use Internet and WIFI must be piling up.
How many Wifi, etc contracts does the average household now have for Keitai, PDA, Game-stations, etc.
In Japan for in-house stuff, connectivity we can use our fiber-connections which are fairly inexpensive but once you leave the confines of the home it gets pricey.
There are those few times per year when I think a cell phone might be useful
On days like those I borrow Mr cleo's. One of these days I might even learn how to use it.
seems somehow sad some people never have any reason to leave their house
No, what's sad is the people who feel they can't leave the house without an electronic umbilical cord. When I'm out, I'm out. I can call folk when I get back.
On the other hand, I'm glad my kids have mobile phones so I can catch them wherever they are.

If a smart phone is a regular cell phone, then 45% of readers don't use cell phones at all? That can't be right.

smartacus
So 45% of respondents don't use any cell phone at all? In this day and age, that's remarkable.

Nah, not remarkable. We just don 't want to be slaves to technology and be haunted by people/work/etc.
Actually I got a Cel but don't use it, it is for emegencies only very few people got that number. Said the same for my e-mail and home-phone.

Phones are only as smart as the person using them.

@nisegaijin.
No, I do have many friends, just not a slave to technology and on someone else's beg and call 24/7.
Blame a job where I was on callout 24/7 and needed to be at work within 20 minutes, and the calls do come at baaad times as many ex-gf can attest. :P

Question: I got two paper cups connected with a taunt string. So which type is it?
0
cleo
cactusjack - I think it depends on the length of the string and the size of the cups.
Also maybe whether they're paper cups or plastic ones. (I think the hi-tech ones are made out of silicone)
