Depends on how loud they are, doesn't it?

PrideInJapanese; Most bad manners on trins is by Japanese. I would prefer them on the phone than falling asleep on me.

I think everyone (Japanese & Foreigners) riding on transportation or in restaurants should have better manners using their cell phones.

    Gurukun

The talking part doesn't really bother me if it's not to loud. It's the megaloud ringers that some have that bothers me on a train, bus or when in a resraurants.

  • 0

    smartacus

Sometimes it does. It also makes me earn for simpler times before we had cell phones. I don't see why there is need to remain connected all the time. I personally prefer to read a book when I am on a train.

I agree with Gurukun - it's the LOUD setting of the ringers that annoys me, not the talking. What's the difference between one person talking and 2, really, in terms of noise?

    jinjapan

the trains & buses aren't too bad, but not too nice in a restaurant. also, for some odd reason, people seem to scream when talking into a cell phone. also have to learn how to use manner mode!

    MrRoadrage

A restaurant is different from a bus or train. You visit a restaurant to relax in a certain ambiance. Of course some berk nattering on his mobile would be annoying. On a bus or train, it doesn't really matter in comparison with other, far more intrusive annoyances.

    retaliator

Talking is a freedom and no bad behavior, so it doesn't bother me. The train or bus is not a library either where it should be quiet so what's the big deal with talking. Yelling into the phone is a whole different story though.

  • 0

    Gurukun

Wow, with all the signage you see around about talking on a cell phone on buses, trains and restaurants, it's interesting to see the votes on this. About 50-50%.

    JayJayE

Like other people, like only bothers me if it's loud and obnoxious. People who answer the phone on the train, put a hand over their mouth and talk business or tell someone they'll be late, no problem.

Young people (especially girls) talking at full volume about the boots, handbag, miniskirt they just bought with huge "eeeeeeeeeee!?" is really annoying. Mind you that's annoying even if they're not on the phone.

And yeah the megaload ringers and video game noises. You'd think people could figure out there is a manner mode and you can use headphones on most cellphones these days.

  • 0

    HonestDictator

The volume factor is more of the issue than the phones themselves. Even with people who are not on cell phones when they can't keep their voice down its annoying. So no issue with people talking on cell phones or conversations, as long as they keep it down to a decent level.

    nisegaijin

Why is this considered bad? It's pretty asinine! Does it bother you when 2 people are having a conversation? How is phone conversation any different?

Personally, when I am on the phone it bothers me when other people try to interrupt. As if they are jealous that I get incoming calls and they don't!

I dont see the problem talking on phones if its done discreetly, as some people (but not may)talk on trains. I do notice that Chinese people speak so loudly to each other and on phones on the train but I guess they all borne with less hearing than other races so that cant be helped. Also, I dont see why it is rood or impolite, I do find they way Japanese suck there snot back up inside there noses so discussing it almost brings me to violence but I prefer to pass out the free tissue packs that proliferate.

What really bothers me is when these idiots hold up traffic while blithely messaging on their phones in the pedestrian crosswalk. Many's the time I felt the urge to jam the accelerator pedal to the floor and leave them crushed under the tyres of my Hummer.

    hoserfella

nisegaijin - why is it rude? It's rude for the same reason no one wants to hear you fart, burp, or see you pick your nose; A phone call is something to be done in private. Pure bad manners. At worst, blatant exhibitionism.

  • 0

    Xeno23

I don't get people who talk on their cell phones in public restrooms; even while in stalls doing their "business". I don't find it particularly rude, just gross. I always try and do my part by exaggerating the natural sounds I produce, you know, to enhance the experience ^_^

  • 0

    nisegaijin

hoserfella, can you explain why? I found no correlation between a phone call and nose picking.. care to explain yourself?

    Is normal conversation rude too?

You think it's rude? prove it!

    @PrideinJapanese

Yeah, because Japanese people are all really well-mannered. Is it traditional Japanese manners to sneeze as loud as you can and not even cover your mouth/nose in public? Or to grunt down some nasal mucous every 20 seconds or so while on the train? Or to elbow people out of the way and force yourself onto/off a train? To stink of alcohol and/or tobacco? To pick your teeth in public?

Does it bother you when people talk on cell phones on buses, trains or in restaurants?

No, because it's no different to talking to someone who is there with you, a lot of the time, even quieter. There are a lot worse stuff than talking on a phone on a bus, train or in a restaurant that happen all the time and no-one bats an eyelid. People here are hardly the most considderate in the world, why they go @pe$hit about someone talking on a phone is hard to understand.

  • 0

    hoserfella

nisegaijin - If you are in the 3% minority who are capable of carrying on a cell call discreetly, then all apologies. If however you are in the majority that cannot, I doubt you would understand. You want proof that it's rude? look the poll results. If 60% of respondents say it's rude, it is.

Today I was cycling through kichijoji and stopped at a light to get to the place where I park.

One lady behind me was talking so loud that people looked for the person she was talking to like 20 metres away. Nah, she was on her Keitai.

I don't mind people having a quiet conversation on the Keitai but when you see people having a chin-wag with their BFF on the platform, gets on the train and is still chatting getting off. All at the same volume, etc you got to wonder ....

  • 0

    Greapper1

depends on how loud they are speaking / the content of their discussion. I really don't want to hear about their sex lives while commuting.

  • 0

    Realistic

Yes, only if it is too loud!

Else talking on phone is just like talking with a person aboard.

  • 0

    whiskeysour

It doesn't bother me at all, plus I'm a frequent user on the train, bus or whenever i feel like it.

Restaurants buses and trains I keep my conversation at a low volume. Sometimes I laugh at a funny joke or telling a funny story.

    I really don't care if I hurt someone's feelings.

Anyways japanese people like text mailing rather than talking on the phone. That is why they will never have "ROLLOVER MINUTES" or discounts on phone conversation. If they do it's only designated at a certain time frame.

Yesterday, some old man was staring at me with a bad look on his face. I'm always stared at on the train talking or not talking on the phone. SO WHATEVER. I remember i bought two cases of 100 colored balls for my son and my job.

Some old guy made a digusted face at me, sometimes I carry christmas decorations on the train and i get weird stares. So, yes SOME japanese people are annoyed about anything a person does. They are truly anal.

Good Luck out there all of my phone users on the bus, train or restaurant. If you need some defense courses or a tactical response if someone is bothering you about talking on the mobile i can give you some self defense courses.

I'm kind of torn on this one. Basically, I don't care if people talk on their phones in restaurants or on buses or trains. The only way it annoys me is if I'm at a restaurant with someone, their friend calls, and they take the call. Don't leave me sitting in silence while you chatter with your buddy.

As long as they are discreet - it's fine. People who yell into the phone - land line and cell, and also do the stupid "agreeing sounds" excessively. Tell the other person you are in public and won't be grunting approval every 3-4 seconds but you are still paying attention to their call nonetheless.

    Taka313

I voted no simply because I've been recalibrated. Here in the U.S. loud cell phone conversations are the norm and hands free ear pieces are worn like white trash jewelry. By comparison, what you see in Japan would not bother me.

Doesn't bother me at all. IMHO, it's old fashioned to expect people not to talk on their cell phones in public places unless there is some kind of danger involved from the use of cellphones. Long distance conversations are a necessary and integral part of daily life these days.

The way people generally do it in Japan, I haven't a clue why it should even be considered in the category of manners. Is talking on the train bad manners? Totally agree that Japan tops the list for anal attitudes every time, while so many gross and offensive things - pig-like grunt every twenty seconds while aspirating snot, sneezing all over everyone else, jerking epileptically into everyone around while sleeping standing, parking massive bags that spill onto the next person's lap while sitting, falling asleep on strangers' shoulders, standing zombie-like in the middle of the train doorway when everyone's trying to get in and out, junior high students with massive sports bags dumped in the middle of a crowded carriage, men with splayed out legs taking up half the neighbouring seat, ear-splitting announcements every 45 seconds, 1 minute announcements of garbage that the useful bit could be said in 10 seconds ... and yet none of these figure in all those 'mind your manners' announcements which are plastered over every surface of every train.

I think that almost everyone has cell phones. If hundreds of people start to talk on cell phones at the same time, it really bothers me. But I don't mind about only one or two persons.

doesnt bother me as long as people are not yelling or screaming on the phone. it DOES bother me, though, when people let their phones ring for a long time without picking it up, and the ring tone is really loud..

  • 0

    kokorocloud

Doesn't really bother me, no, as long as the person isn't being obnoxiously loud about it-- which people do even when they're not on the phone.
