I think if someone is using these sites, then they are actually interacting MORE with society! Blaming technology for anti-social behaviour is complete rubbish!
I know this kid who at school has no friends. He is often bullied because he is different. On his XBox, however, he has many friends and when they talk, he is respectful and he is respected. Thanks to the game networking he has some kind of life. Isolation from reality? Maybe, but helping him cope with his problems. Better this than booze and other "adult" ways of isolation from reality.
Not sure that "reality" is the right word, in some aspects I do agree.
Those are limiting in physical and real-life interactions as the person online is just someone/something and not often not considered a real person.
Thus discussions, etc tend to be contacted differently than they would be in real face-to-face conversation.
Said that I would say that TV had a similar effect in regards as to how people perceive the received information contents, often news are simple to a news-program in a movie, etc.
Online news, etc have somewhat lost that "reality" aspect and are not more upsetting than an action-movie, etc.
Interacting on the internet is not socialising...
Kids these days have no social skills because they do not learn these important life skills using the internet.
Some old farts just can't keep up with changing trends.
Internet interaction is a life skill most essential today, what are social skills if you can't type an email?
How much more interesting this forum would be if we were all in one big room making comments directed at each other or other people.
Except for it would be very hard to keep track of what everyone says. when you have everything written down in a thread, you can always go back and quote.
Governments are realizing that these social networks can be dangerous for them. Previously they were pushing the social network agenda and now they view these people as a liability or even terrorists. =You are now indoctrinated that social networks are bad.
I don't think the millions playing FarmTown will agree. -Not just a game but a way to communicate online and to keep in touch.
=Expect to see more social network "crimes" publicized to demonize these people. This will backfire since most humans are highly social creatures.

Are you having a laugh?
If you have social skills, it's not difficult to use it in it's written form. Where as having perfect email etiquette does not always convert to face-to-face interaction.
old farts
Proper old farts would know how to write letters... which would traslate quite easily to emails... it may however, take extra time to be typed out, as they will possibly use the "hunt and press" type typing technique...
Communicate daily with many "old farts"(incl my parents and grandparents) daily via forums, etc. Ain't a spring-chicken myself.
And I got to say some of those older guys are more net-savvy than many teens, etc.
Heck, you might get a surprise if you took an age-poll right here.
But agree on average older posters do have better posting manners as they simply transfered them from paper to online.

Social networks keep me in touch with most friends and family, plus that's where I find out where the next party is.

Quote for the day: Arguing on the internet is like running in the special Olympics.
Even if you win you are still retarded. :D

It depends. But there are plenty of other ways to isolate a person from reality, so. Too much of anything can be bad.

Facebook is just more evidence of mooing humanity following its bovine-like herd instinct, as it mindlessly chews its cud.

Reality sucks. That's why FB and other social networking sites are so popular.

And yet thanks to this "unreal" place I was able to find out about my friends after the earthquake and tell my friends abroad I'm fine.
