“but eventually if you are capable of critical thinking you can figure out what is legit and what is not.”

But doesn’t it follow that you would be approaching every subject with your own prejudices that have been built from selective viewing of information that you agree with? What you agree with is comfortable & easy to accept, but to some degree this in it self becomes the trap that leads you (us) into simply reinforcing our closed thinking. To what extent is the internet changing what we believe?

  • sabiwabi at 07:15 PM JST - 27th January

bishamonten, I'm sure many fall in that trap. But I am certain that if you rely only on mainstream sources, you will never understand what is truly happening, you will be misinformed and mislead. Critical thinking is very important.

Internet is where I can post comments and read news. I can read 1000s of newspapers of world on any nation,I can also post comments in many comments section.

I can read comments from all over the world. Really best form of eduaction in the world, is via internet. You can also watch youtube cyber tv and other livestreams of many nations. I like posting and getting feedbacks from my posts. You can do research on any subject in biology, physic, chemistry, history, engineering, just name a subject it's on the net.

More pages are being build up to tune of billions of pages. Looking for the day when google says we have hit 1000 billion search pages.

Imagine in just ,one page any broadcast channel, can live stream a TV/radio channel or movie channel or education channel, how many channels of TV/Radio, the future people, will have in all nations. World is becoming a smaller and smaller village among all english reading people via cyber interactive news and cyber TV/Radio channels.

It doesn't sound like you are merely suggesting "critical thinking". Rather is sounds as if you are suggesting that if people do not read what you read that they are incapable of critical thinking.

The point is that with the internet anyone with a connection and a keyboard can become a "journalist" and "report" the world as the see fit with no connection to reality neccessary and no requirment to actually describe factual information.

However, I think that the amazing access we have to all kinds of information is, in the end, a good thing. Someone in a desert in Africa can listen to Japanese radio live. Someone in Japan can listen to Iranian radio live. We can read news as it occurs and react to it when it took our ancestors weeks or months to even know about such things. It is just important to think about where the information is coming from and whether it is truly credible or not.

All in all, the internet is a wealth of information and it can also be a lot of fun, too.

Very true, that is why I wrote "my guess is that at least 95% (99%?) of what is on the net is crap, much of it on purpose to mislead us or discredit other sites." However, it is clear that with MSN, anyone with good language skills can become a "journalist" and "report" the world as their boss see's fit with no connection to reality neccessary and no requirment to actually describe factual information. And since all western MSN is controlled by just few like-minded people, we all get the same news with the same agenda. Most people capable of critical thinking have realized this already.

lessee, web surfing, email, other. watching movies sometimes.

  • kinniku at 05:00 PM JST - 29th January

    sabiwabi,

The really funny thing is that in the past when you have suggested some of the questionable websites you say you go to for information and I have looked at them, I am amazed at how almost every other questionable website features the exact same information with the exact same wording and spelling mistakes (if any). So, I am convinced that what you are reading is the result of the same exact agenda spread around to a bunch of like-minded sites. Not exactly 'critical thinking'...

Where's the button for people to select "porn" I would assume that would get over half the responses, I guess "other" will have to do.

    Making stuff up again?

I guess "other" will have to do.

Badge213, yeah, I guess that's "other"; but its quite strange that "work" and "porn" end up in the same category!

  • kinniku at 08:24 PM JST - 29th January

    Making stuff up again?

Never have made up stuff and never will. However, the fact that you asked confirms you don't actually read the stuff you claim to be reading.

BTW, there probably in the same category for people who work in the "industry", ne?

  • phooks at 07:53 PM JST - 31st January

So far everyone who has said education has, ironically, spelled something wrong in their post.

  • grafton at 08:38 AM JST - 1st February

Which just goes to show the need.

    Or should that be "witch"?

Oh dear, ware is my dicktionharry? I no, I'll use the intarnet.

This being JT there are a lot of Americans here & American spelling can seem a little odd to those that have had an English education. It seems to be different from state to state.
