Some interpret this as Tokyo "winning" the vote, but am seeing that 58% (on a site focusing on Japan) would like to see the Olympics in a location other than Tokyo. That non-Tokyo vote happens to be split among other cities. Would be interesting to see a head-to-head vote between Tokyo and, say, Rio de Janeiro.
I don't think Tokyo needs the Olympics. Like New York or Paris, it is already established as a major world city. In '64 it made sense, Tokyo needed to make it's name. But why now? Fukuoka would have made more sense. And recent Olympics seem to cost too much money and lead to facilities that don't get adequately utilized in the long term. I don't see it as a good thing for the city.
Tokyo will win, if they can galvanize the people and local Govt fully behind the idea, that was tokyo's major weak point in round one, they kicked butt in most other aspects of the proposal except that one.
I don't know that Tokyo is adequately prepared to host the Olympics (or the Special Olympics which typically follow). The continuing lack of access for physically challenged folks is a real issue here and the infrastructure is already bursting at the seams with commuters and improvements have not kept pace with the need. I also think the language barriers continue to be surprisingly significant for an international event of this caliber. Outside of the gaijin ghettos, Tokyo is not an international "user friendly" city.
****After 2008 olympics, which is will over in 66 days, there is a need for japan to take over after 2012 games in London. China being now a 7000 billion dolar economy, has done great development for poor developing nations.
Next we need japan to take over after 2012, with olympic games2016 and development help for poor developing nations.
Japan has many multinational corporations of world standard, for all these kind of developement things.******GO TOKYO2016, GO**
The Olympics in Chicago will be a nice way to end the final glorious year of an Obama administration. And, since Spain had the Olympics in 1992, and Japan had the winter olympics in 1998, so you can't really make the argument that the US had it too many times, otherwise you have to go with Rio.
In any case, all four are good choices, so, wherever 2016 ends up, it should be a good year. Of course, the Olympics are diminishing in importance, as well, so it might not be such a big deal at the time, either.
I picked Rio because it's comfortably far from Japan, and due to the time zone difference the events will be shown when it's the middle of the night here, so as not to interfere (hopefully) with my normal TV viewing.
****JT friend,GenkiDesuKa, yousay there is no big deal in 2016olympics, the 2016 olympics is diminishing in importance.
Let japan host then in 2016, because asians badly need more sport activties, while in US/West ,you have so much world championships/other sport world class events to participate.
You do not really need olympics in US/West,there is already too much sport activities/events and sport careers. GenkiDesuKa, you have also good points, in your post, may the best bid win in 2009.
Hope japan/JT readers get to work on this bid, so japan make a most sucessful bid, to win in 2009 IOC voting.****

Brazil too dangerous. Chicago is in America. Madrid? 'Nuff sayd.
It's Tokyo. The only Tokyo detrators I've heard so far are obviously spouting prejudiced notions against the Japanese.

Rio - only cuz it's the only city of the four I've never been to and so that we'd hear endless plays of the fine Duran Duran song of the same name.
