The US shouldn't even be on this list.
And I'd amend "The Europeans" to "The French".
Both South Korea and China also have the technology
so they should feel a bit left out.
theres a bit on wikipedia about it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-speed_rail
why the US is on the list is ridiculous seeing they have only the Acela Express however they are planning to build some. Europe would have to be the best with the largest network

Haven't seen you in a while! Anyway, to be fair, I think Germany also needs to be on the list, since they are involved in a lot of the tech in other countries, no?
I think Europe's got it down. Japan definitely has the best system in the world, but they are struggling with the mag-lev tech. and don't seem able to keep up with Germany and France in rights to build in other nations.
As for the US being on the list... who the HELL voted for them?? hahaha. If this list were based on countries that are going to build them in the future, it's ridiculous to lump all of Europe into a continent and keep Japan and the US separate, and without adding various other countries that may build them in the future or have plans to start them soon.
Even out in the flat open corn fields, Amtrak trains in the US barely hit 80 mph. A JR express does that passing through a station. The US is way behind in this race.
News Flash: The U.S. does not even have high-speed rail. They lack the densities to support such a transportation system. Airplanes are much more economical.
Eventhough no one can beat the Japanese technological advancement, I find it very hard to fathom how Jpeople's priorities inj life has been messed up. Family structure and values is something to think about. Maybe we should turn back the clock!
News Flash: The U.S. does not even have high-speed rail. They lack the densities to support such a transportation system.
News Flash: You need to do some fact checking, by definition of "high speed rail" the US has the Acela, yes it aint great but by definition it is "high speed rail". As for airplanes being more economical, the airline industry has been losing money for decades, it's only because the US government pours BILLIONs into the aviation industry that it stays afloat, yet the US government spends only a small fraction of overall transportation budget on rail, though its changing a little, there's still a long way to go.
Now if we were to talk about who has a good rail system (not just high speed rail), the US doesn't have that bad of a rail system, IF you look at it from a freight and not passenger point of view. If you look at the tonnage and amount of freight moved by rail in the US crossing the country, it is pretty amazing.
South Korea uses French technology, China uses German maglev technology, but it also uses high speed trains from Europe and Japan, including the CH2, which is just a modified JREast E2 series Shinkansen, Taiwan uses a modified JRCentral/JRWest 700 Series Shinkansen with a different nose.
Technology-wise, European trains are faster than Japanese trains. Service-wise, the Japanese beat the Westerners to a pulp (as in most service-related areas).
I agree, Europe has the fastest trains but Japan has the better Infrastructure to use the High-Speed Train efficiently....
The Europeans has the fastest trains but cannot really use it efficiently because they don't have the Infrastucture in place.
Ok to make it simple. Japan have 100% separate Tracks for the Bullet Train from point A to point B, which Europe Trains do not have.
it's silly to put america on this list, but we all know what it is for, which is too bad to have global lefties make themselves feel good. in saying that america does have one high speed rail line, the acela. it clips along at 240 kph.
north america is ripe for high speed rail. what's so surprising is that back in the heyday of locomotives canada and america had the makings then something happened, the automobile, and so the oil and car makers got a foothold in washington and to a lesser extent ottawa thus having the north americans shooting themselves in the foot.
the japanese have a done superb job with their entire rail system even though I personally dislike the shinkansen it is very useful and serves the people very well.
After taking the Acela to New York I would have to say the US wins hands down. Best ride, best level of service. Just like US cars, US trains are best in the world. A pinnacle none else may ever reach!

The U.S. having the best high-speed rail tech? That's downright laughable.

the u.s. doesn't have high speed rail. so, i'm assuming they don't have the technology either. unless it's one of those best kept secrets.

I obviously didn't vote for third choice, but what's your definition of high-speed rail?

"Who has the best (fill in the blank) in the world?"
The answer is always the US. I'm getting tired of anti-Americans saying someone else is #1 at something.

The train in Shanghai was the most ultimate. Especially when it takes corners at over 400km/p/h.

Hmm... but the Shanghai MagLev is technology from Germany and only cover 30kms.

interestingly some chinese doesn't know where the train in his/her country came from!

Japan, even the president of the SNCF (French rail company) admitted that the Shinkansen is nearly 80% more reliable then the TGV.
