By rescuing dogs and cats, you get in touch with life. It is a way to save the human soul, too. If children are given a chance to interact with animals, they will never abandon their pets when they grow up.

Kasumi Tanino, chief of NPO SALA Network, a pet rescue project in Tokyo. Each year, SALA takes in and finds homes for about 30 animals, given up due to reasons related to old age—such as the owner requiring nursing care and the onset of dementia. (Asahi Shimbun)
