Customers often talk about their work or family problems because they trust me. I'll definitely be part of this campaign to give a helping hand to people with worries.

Kenji Takebe who has run the Take Hair Salon in Toyama for 35 years. The city government is embarking on the nation’s first attempt to prevent suicides by having hairdressers act as mediators between their customers and psychological counselors. (Daily Yomiuri)

This has got to be a joke, right, found in a pile of Monty Python skits. God save this clueless country and its useless bureaucrats floundering between absurdity and idiocy.

I think this is a great idea. Hairdressers often have very personal conversations with their customers and the customers can open up to them easily. Going to a psychological counselor, on the other hand, is considered a sign of weakness. If the hairdresser can introduce people, it may lead to more people seeking professional help.

bicultural.
Agree, I also think it is a good and a way to get the community involved.

ben4short, not necessarily this is a problem only in Japan. People all over the world have similar problems and it is a fact that they do talk to their hairdressers. You mean your hairdresser is not your friend?:)
It is not absurdity or idiocy; just look around you. There are loads of people, even among your own friends and family who are looking for that kindness and that extra touch. My customer, a 57 year old affluent Japanese lady quite unexpectedly opened her heart to me last week. She was literally screaming her heart out about how she needs help etc. The business meeting turned out to be a socilaising oportunity. Strange but that was ok. Managed to catch up the work in a few extra hours.

Sorry but my local QB hairdressers are under pressure to cut that hair within 10 minutes. No time for idle chit chat.

Of course this is not the local QB, had some chats though.
I used to have a hair-dresser close by that I visited and the family that ran it was like "family" listened, gave advise, etc.
Like with any LOCAL establishment/business once you get to know them and they get to know you a friendship springs up and people open up and talk more than they might want to.
And they often are sorta the pulse of the community and can help out with good/solid advise.
Like I said won't work for QB and other franchise places where staff-turnover is high.
