A spokesperson for Benesse Palette which delivers bento mainly to elderly people’s homes in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward. Delivery workers keep an eye out for accumulation of newspapers and mail, or if their customers fail to answer the door in an effort to help prevent elderly people from dying solitary deaths. I didn't realize people still have newspapers delivered ! As for the mail, I guess that would depend on the "mailbox". Ours is outside and could "overflow" but I believe some houses have mail that goes through the front door onto the floor... Would take some time before anyone realizes how much has accumulated... I still think it's an excellent idea which could save elderly people from dying alone. On the other hand, if they had family living with them or at least a good "retirement" place to live (NOT one of those places where they abuse the residents and steal from them) that would be even better. Loneliness is never a very good solution.

Just a head's up:

If there is a pile up of mail, newspapers, they aren't answering their door, they're already dead.

You want to get to them BEFORE that happens.
