For the U.S. army, the bases in Japan are forward deployments in case of a regional conflict. They would also protect Japan if the Chinese or the North Koreans attacked the archipelago. It would mean an attack against the United States that would trigger an automatic response.

Jean-Vincent Brisset, a researcher at the Institute of International and Strategic Relations in Paris. He says Washington is unlikely to abandon Japan, despite recent irritations over the Futenma base issue. (AFP)

    Japan is already under attack by the Chinese economy. And no support of the world in sight for the Japanese.
