William Hawker, father of murdered British teacher Lindsay Ann Hawker, referring to a letter the Hawker family received from the parents of murder suspect Tatsuya Ichihashi. In the letter, Ichihashi’s parents said their son had wanted to learn English so he could travel to the United States. (Kyodo)

    That's just a standard translation for 'ikan' or 'taihen ikan', a meaningless phrase that gets tossed out when bad things happen.

    Mr Hawker's going to have to get more up on the culture if he wants to get things done. Insulting the Japanese won't help. My advice would be to get tough on the cops. Use the media to play hardball.

    "Insulting the Japanese won’t help"??? WTF! I guess he is 'slightly disappointed by the regrettable deeds of one of them'!!! and may has some right to say whatever he feels or thinks.

    I am not so sure we can expect some sort of open outpouring of emotion from Ichihashi's parents here. All their hopes and aspirations for their son are gone and the guilt must be quite heavy knowing they raised a monster.
