I’m frequently concerned when I hear the word burden used as a description. I suggest that it is an obligation under the alliance to do the hosting and basing of U.S. forces. And for that, the government of Japan gets the services of one of the best and biggest militaries in the world.
Quote of the Day ( 2 )
Lt Gen Keith Stalder, commander of the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific, saying the more than 13,000 Marines on Okinawa play a key role in securing the region from threats such as North Korea, and that the presence should continue. (AP)

Totally agree. Japan pays but a small price for the biggest, baddest security guard on the planet. The black van wimps certainly aren't going to step up to the plate for Japans security. There aren't nearly enough HS grads to fill the ranks.
So, who ya' gonna call....? Mother green and her killing machine!

It's not just Japan that's prospered with the shield of the U.S., I read recently where other nations (even Vietnam) was also concerned about the reduction of forces in Okinawa, as the presence of Americans keeps China's ambitions in check.
And with Japan's aging population and young males more apt to sprain their thumbs on video games than to do some dang push-ups and join the Self Defense Force.. well, it just makes sense for Japan to keep that alliance strong.
