I'm aware that NHK is desperate to expand its audience these days, but I think this project is pretty drastic.

TV critic Nobuo Shiga, referring to NHK’s ground-breaking decision to air two half-hour programs on the subject of gays and lesbians, to be broadcast on NHK-E (Channel 3 in Tokyo) from 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. (Shukan Shincho)

I assume talking about gays and lesbians is best left to the educational system? Or is there something about talking about gays and lesbians that disturbs Mr. Shiga?

Does NHK air programmes on the subject of straight sex? If they do, then fair enough, let the gays have a bite of the apple too.

Can't say I've ever watched any really candid sex programmes on NHK, though. If straight license holders have to go elsewhere, why should gays get different treatment?

Here's a link to some more information. According to the article, this show has covered many topics that might have raised eyebrows, including gender identity disorder.
