It is inevitable that the restaurant industry will oppose the smoking ban because of its likely negative impact on customer numbers.

A senior official of the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, referring to moves to implement a smoking ban in all public facilities, such as schools, hospitals, restaurants and hotels. (NHK)

    such as schools, hospitals,

Funnily enough, there will be plenty opposed to banning smoking in these areas. Why? Because the 'gold lining' in their pockets will decrease. What kind of country allows smoking in a hospital?

    So?

The last time I checked smoking & second-hand smoking were dangerous. Who cares if they oppose? Would they put their wallets above human life? (/sarcasm) Just shove it down their throat.

I also do not understand someone making a comment like this. Did he make this comment out of the blue? He is setting the ground for an opposition even if other parties may not think of one. Maybe there is some more background to this that I am not aware of.

I also make it a point to ask the waiters when I go in if there are any non-smoking areas. And I tell them I probably wouldn't go back if they don't.

I sometimes wonder how those non-smoking areas are designed. Most of the time I see smoke drifting from smoking areas to non-smoking due to bad air-conditioning, seating design,etc... Annoys the hell out of me.

Money here is more important than health. I won't go to a place wihtout a no-smoking section so those places are losing MY money but allowing smoking. Schools? The Japanese profs smoke and don't want to go off campus. Idiots.

The good thing about a complete smoking ban is that it doesn't really negatively effect business for restaurants. If just one restaurant bans smoking, customers may go elsewhere. However, under a total ban, people still need to eat!

I believe most cases of smoking bans cause a small decreases in business to begin with that quickly bounces back. After a while smokers will see it as normal that they have to pop out of a cigarette.

I smoke but cannot stand anyone smoking in a restaurant.

I just cannot, for the life of me, understand why people can't wait till they've left the restaurant to smoke. What is the big rush? Do smokers really enjoy stinky food too?

    tmarie:

you have to make the waiters know that you won't come back as long as there are no non-smoking sections. If enough people kick up a fuss (hardly likely, in Japan), then they'll get the message.
