It is not good for their health if their legs are too cold.

Hiroshi Uchikawa, principal at Niigata municipal Kohshi Senior High School and leader of a campaign to discourage schoolgirls from wearing micro-miniskirts (Asahi Shimbun)

I saw one schoolgirl this morning. I think my handkerchief had more material in it than her skirt.

It's not good for their health to sit in cold classrooms 9 hours a day either.

how about abolishing uniforms all together?

How about actually punishing them for wearing the uniform incorrectly? Kids are kids and I remember doing stuff like this but I certainly stopped whatever behaviour (or hid it) when punished. The worst thing is that most of them have nasty legs anyway. The shorter the skirt, usually the uglier the face.

I like uniforms. Trust me uniforms are awesome. I lived in America for a few years, and kids over there don't have a clue how to tie a belt or wear pants at all!! It made me sick!

Wow! Your visit to the states must have been quite a while back, say 200 years? I don't recall ever having to tie a belt. My peers and I always fastened our belts. I do recall several years of wearing pants, though.

Uniforms have their place, but when the emphisis is placed on too much uniformity, not a pun, something gets lost in the value.

Borscht nailed it: Sitting in a cold school for the better part of a day can't exactly be good for one's health either.

I know he means well, but this principal surely could have come up with a better way to appeal to the concerns of teenage girls. "Cold legs are bad for your health" just doesn't seem like it would rank very high on their list of priorities.

How about some honesty?: "Shortening your skirt like that is like wearing a neon sign that says 'This ass for sale. . . Cheap.'"

Hmmm...a bit of a step back from when they used to be encouraged to wear white underwear, and there were signs out in public suggesting this.

While I do not approve of that, I approve even less of this contrived bullcrap trying to put a damper on the sexuality of young females, and yes, this is part of their sexual identity during their formative years. I think the world has enough cold women as it is.

If there were high levels of violent crime against girls these age, I might support a campaign, using truth rather than bullcrap, to curb the wearing of short skirts. I do not see that here.

i support uniforms; there's enough image-related pressure on people as it is, at least uniforms avoid this

Yeah he's not a doctor. How would he know? I would say a bigger danger would be the perverts on the trains and their 'busy' hands!

How? By forcing individuals to loose their identity and wear that someone else chose for them while making sure it's uncomfortable and has bad hygiene hazards?

I don't think its as to take your "identity" rather than, who do you have to prove who you are by wearing what ever you want? and not by being your self? I like uniforms because it makes people look the same but it's character that makes people stand out, not the latest fashion or the luxurious clothing or the expensive shoes... getting back to topic wearing tiny skirts only makes a girl look indecent and like she has no manners, thus for lowering her standards, to a... (bad word goes here)

ohhh and by the way earlier what I meant is that a lot of people wear their pants to her knees, and showing have of their underwear.... I hated school in the states....

There aren't many things more resistant to the cold in this world than a high school girl's legs, particularly in Niigata! It used to amuse me that you'd see them trudging through the snow in Joetsu in Ugg boots, but with an acre of bare leg. Seemed to defeat the object of the sheepskin boots....
