It is very surprising to me that Japan has been left off this trip, especially when Rudd is going to China, in particular, and without there having been a very thorough and public explanation of why he is not going to Japan.

Hugh White, professor of strategic studies at the Australian National University, on Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s decision to skip Japan on an upcoming trip. Rudd will visit Washington later this month, then Britain, meet European leaders in Brussels, attend a NATO meeting in Bucharest, before spending four days in China on his way home. (The Age)

It's not a big deal. Rudd will be here in July. Japan doesn't care who the Aussie PM is, just as long as the nation's industries get their iron ore, natural gas, wheat, beef and whatever else they import.

The Japanese are worried (probably correctly) because KRudd has lots of links to the Chinese and speaks passable Mandarin. With this, there is a good chance that the ties with China will strengthen and possibly become better than those with Japan.
