Japan could shift to renewable energy sources for 60% of its electricity requirements over the next two decades, with a super grid across the country, and underwater off the coast, that would zip electricity around cheaply and efficiently to meet demand.

Softbank founder Masayoshi Son, unveiling his plan for 60% of Japan’s power to come from natural sources by 2030. (Techworld.com)

    Sounds good. But I wonder if there is a chance for it to become true.

    Japan should invest more in Geo Thermal power stations. As I understand, Japanese technology is high in this field and they sell their power turbines around the world. Also, Japan has a lot of potential thermal fields round the country.

    sounds great but that just means that japan won`t do it. i hate to be a naysayer but when have you seen efficeincy in japan - other than assembly lines???

    Son is smart. Let's see tidal energy used as it is an island country.

    Masayoshi Son is hitting the nail on the head and is the man to get something done. He should be the PM.

    There were plans to build 12 new reactors including 2 that were to be built at the crippled Fukushima plant.

    Once again, the summer power crisis and another possible one in the winter shows how seriously weaken the country is because it lacks a national unified power grid system which all the power generating companies resisted so that they could have a monopoly over power generation, supply and the price to the consumer. In the UK which has a national power grid, consumers have a choice of suppliers which produces competitive prices.

    An undersea cable to Korea could also provide additional power.

    @pawatan - okay, i will give you those but everywhere else - too much service (it becomes hindering), too many meetings to talk about meetings about the situation, then there has to be a trip to check everything out, then there has to be a gaining of everyones understanding, and a meeting about that............i could go on. too bad we couldnt get mr. Son with run the country. those guys would NEVER take the job.

    Currently, 1.5% of total power generated is by geothermal which could be increased to a maximum of about 13-15% of total power. Tidal wave power isn't even being used.

    Tidal technology is already there and proven. Give it a go.

    The good thing is that the coastlines are already so ugly no-one will object to wind turbines there.

    @JapanGal,

    yes! tidal power is being used in other countries like the UK too, but currently, not here, and with so much coast line and strong tides.

    Good idea from Son. Hmm I wonder how far solar panel technology has advanced and being used these days. That's another major source of clean energy.
