Japanese companies have started hiring worldwide. If they hope to enter into the increasingly globalized international business world, there is a need for global talents to stay competitive and to fuel expansion.

So what. When highly talented folks realize there is a glass ceiling for foreigners due to Japanese companies/boards lack of comfort with foreigners (like Olympus), these folks will leave. When Japan even approaches the U.S. or other Western countries, in the number of top-tier companies led by foreigners, then there will be something to celebrate.

As Public Relations Directors go that quote is cliché ridden banality that belongs back in the 80's.

I'm sure foreign talent will just come rushing to japan for their glorious 1 year contract and untold hassle finding a place to live. Avoid japan at all costs. Much better places to choose.

Is there something I'm missing because the prices they're advertising for engineers in Careers section seem totally bogus.

Full-time engineering manager, Y3.0M - 4.0M / year, negotiable.

Contract engineering manager, Y5.0M - 7.0M / year.

Full-time experienced engineer, Y2.9M - 7.0M / year, another position Y180K - Y270K / month.

Salaries are not competitive with global standards, nor will they ever be. The way search firms market the jobs in Japan are as follows: You'll be taking a salary cut and working a lot more, but you get the JAPANESE experience and the perks of living in Japan.

This is why people vacation in Japan, but never want to have a career there.

Y2.9M = $25K US at current exchange ... San Francisco minimum wage is about $22K/year as of January, rising to $30K in May (assuming 2000-hour work year). A Y2.9M job with mandatory overtime could wind up paying a significantly lower hourly wage.
