Japanese people think Chinese people are very crude, rough and uncivilized. But when they have personal contact with us they say, 'You're not like I thought Chinese people were like.' But each side has its prejudices about the other.

Not just the Japanese who think that! Have met a few Chinese people who think I am right about them being a tad behind in the manners dept.

Because by Western standards, they are. Ever watch Chinese try to get on a train?

Everyone is different and you'll get crude and rough people in any country. I've seen horrible manners in Japan, but I don't judge all Japanese by these uncivilized people.
Having said that, the train (and road) manners in China are horrendous. Hardly anyone offered my elderly father a seat while we were in the waiting room at Shanghai station. Haven't travelled on the subways in China for over 20 years, so I can't comment on that, but I have a friend who is ethnic Chinese but comes from SE Asia. She was first in the line, waiting for an EMPTY subway train to arrive at the platform. By the time she got on, all the seats were taken. In Hong Kong, at least, many line up.

Can't wait to read OssanAmerica's comments with the persistent "China's so uncivilised" rant~

Manners aside, the Chinese behave in a more linear way than the Japanese. Not saying one is better or worse than the other.

Pukey2, many people from HK hate mainlanders because they are so rude and uncivilized. Which is one reason why some have left HK and gone elsewhere. Taiwan is much the same- ashamed of the why the people on the mainland behave.
