Normal physiological processes as well as psychosocial factors is what results in the elderly being at higher risk than the younger people for malnutrition but unfortunately malnutrition is often unrecognized and under-treated by nurses and healthcare professionals. That's because they don't use efficiently the available nutritional screening tools. They lack awareness and knowledge regarding the usefulness of nutritional screening tools. So nutritional screening needs to become an essential part of the routine nursing practice when caring for the older adults and the nurses need to take advantage of the available tools to assist them in quantifying and qualifying the incidence of malnutrition and or the risk for malnutrition in their older adult patients.
