Most of the people in Tokyo are sleep-deprived. They need to know better sleep can bring more efficiency to daily activities.

Makoto Bannai, a senior researcher at Ajinomoto, that sells a sleep supplement called Glyna. Ajinomoto sponsored the study that showed Tokyo office workers slept at least 30 minutes less than their counterparts in New York, Paris, Shanghai and Stockholm each night. (Bloomberg)

I would have guessed at least an hour.

Depends on your definition of sleep. If you mean sleep as in getting 7-8 hours of consistent sleep, I wonder if many in Tokyo keep this lifestyle. If, however, Mr. Bannai allowed for study participants to add up all their "naps" over the day, then I can see people honestly answering 7-8 hours, but I doubt this is a healthy and restive sleep. In which case, I agree with Paul and think the avg. person in Tokyo gets much sleep.

Oops! Should have been "...and think the avg. person in Tokyo doesn't get much sleep."

I think many of us have met Japanese who are out on the town during a weeknight and have to work the next morning. And I've always been amazed how they can drink until the wee hours and still function ( or maybe not ) the next day.

I'm sure pretty much all Tokyoites know this already, simply by the their own feeling of tiredness, and what they can see around them (about 60% of people sleeping on an evening train). Bosses will also know this, seeing their employees napping on lunch, constantly yawning and generally looking tired; but of course, for Japanese, anything like this is an elephant in the room, so no one's going to take the initiative and actually say/do anything to improve the situation (e.g. bosses telling staff to "go home, rest, enjoy time with your family/friends, and come back in tomorrow refreshed").

No, instead it'll forever be the usual "Ganbare!" platitudes

They can't realize this as they are so sleep deprived that their brain is knocked cold.

Making siestas common here would be great. I know a lot of people who sleep in the afternoon in meetings and in front of the computer. Siestas ain't just for kids.
