People try not to pay too much attention to what is happening at Fukushima. It is as if they are looking through a kind of filter trying to think, 'that can't happen here.'

Not very reassuring, is it. No wonder things don't change very quickly around here!

Wrong-I am paying a lot of attention! History repeats, don't we all know that lesson by now?

Not very true, either. It seems everyone I talk to is paying attention to Fukushima.

@Pawatan: Yes, but that's people where we are, right? Those people, over in the Arcade, --other than in the 'city' itself-- have no real sense of what the consequences can be. Denial is a defense of the uninformed and that will be what most of those people are, farmers, country, small town folk. AKA Not a clue.

YongYang, I don't know about that. I was in inaka far from Kanto this weekend and the locals I had drinks with seemed remarkably well informed. I imagine the farmers see what is happening to the lives and livelihoods of their brothers and sisters in Tohoku and have the same concerns that such would happen to them.

Perhaps before 3/11 people did not think about such things but I imagine most adults in this country have made it a point to be informed now, especially if it could happen to them.

Its the "shouganai" attitude of Japanese people. Foreigners are fully aware and wary of the situation in and around Fukushima.

We are not paying attention to what is happening in Fukushima, we paid attention to what has already happened in Fukushima. I think that the reality has to do with lack of competence. Come on Japanese people, get real, open your eyes and most of all, open your mind, the danger is factual. The future of this country lies in our children and you are doing little or nothing to safeguard their future. Start checking the level of radiation present in the school meals all over the country and get a proper system to assure that they are not eating high level of radiation. We want to help the farmers affected by the tragedy, but not with the lives of our children. Can you please implement a simple and effective radiation monitoring system that certifies the safety of the food? Is that too costly? Perhaps is too inconvenient? Well, mistakes have been made already and only lack of intelligence and coherence can make things worse. We do not mind eating vegetables or beef from Fukushima and/or from other affected areas as long as they are certified as SAFE to consume. It is quite simple really, if you do not do that immediately, in 10 years or maybe less we will be in a country where the main problem will be birth malformation, and do you know where that will lead to? Use your imagination and common sense!

Yes you are right, absolutely nobody else is concerned about such things. :/
