President Obama looked me in the eye and listened attentively to every word I said, demonstrating great sincerity. This was very impressive.

Prime Minister Taro Aso, writing in his email newsletter about his White House meeting with the U.S. president this week.

And then Obama said, 'Sorry, no lunch, I'm busy'.

Does Obama speak Japanese? No? Didn't think so! He should have been looking at translator!!! Not that smart that chap, is he?

nisegaijin, please allow me to explain 'why' that comment was completely uncalled for: President Obama probably does not speak Japanese, but Aso has a pretty good command of English, well enough to get any point across in a face-to-face meeting with the President. Certainly better than Koizumi did. It was actually impressive, given Aso's political troubles at home. Assistants and diplomats, of course, handle the fine details.

I would also guess that Aso's assessment of President Obama's interest seems comparative, almost as if another U.S. President DIDN'T listen to Aso, or anyone else for that matter.

Not that smart that chap, is he?

Obama? Well, so far he didn't start a war in a country that couldn't/didn't attack his, he didn't allow an entire city to drown, he didn't destroy the world economy. But other than that, we'll see if you're right.

I believe standard protocol is to look at the person speaking, not the translator (if there is one).

Looks like this was the first time ever that someone listened to what Aso has to say...
