South Korea's and Japan's obsessive focus on Dokdo (called Takeshima in Japan) is the result of the strategic myopia permitted by the U.S. alliance. As long as the U.S. is around to insure them both a

Probably some truth to this. Because of the mutual agreements with the U.S. they both know they can posture and talk tough to each other all they want, since it can never come to anything more than that. Kinda like what happens with two siblings, and all the parents can do is say "grow up" and "knock it off".

I think there is a lot of truth to this and I have often wondered why the US allowed South Korea to build those facilities on Dokdo/Takeshima. You have to believe that the US knew that SK was going to build those facilities yet they did nothing to stop it even though they know Japans position on those islands and had to know that building those facilities would increase tensions between Japan and SK. Does that mean that the US actually takes South Koreas side in the dispute?

I don't think its Japan's focus on Takeshima, really it is korea who keeps sniping at every turn, never a day goes by without. Its almost like waking up and having your morning coffee, if its not korea bangin on about japan its china.
Japan is more focused on Senkaku's than those other little craggy rocks korea is wanting. That is the small prize.
It pathetic really that korea and china keep hating on Japan all this time and will not let it go, like a pit bull on a trouser leg.
