I think it's similar to the women in the workplace issue in that it'll happen a lot quicker as soon as those involved start demanding it. Like the workplace issue, it's hard to blame the complacency of those involved considering what the norm is here in Japan.

I wouldn't have a problem with gay marriage coming to Japan. Seeing what Japanese girls seem to think of the average young Japanese guy it might become the new normal.

However, I think it should come with and by the consent of the people and not be imposed by judges.

Much more pressing issue than Fukushima and economy and the like.

It's not surprising that Abe is against same-sex marriage.

Let's face it, the watchword of Abe, the LDP and the Ultra right is not tolerance, is it?

And this is why the judiciary should be independent of politics. Constitutions are important precisely because they protect minorities, but if the interpretation of the constitution can be overruled by politicians representing the majority then they're not doing their job.

The best decisions to ever come out of the U.S. Supreme Court where when the Chief Judge and the President actively hated each other.

Last I checked, you don't need to like something to be tolerant of it. That painting of anyone who doesn't like gay marriage as intolerant is quite intolerant, actually.

@Wakarimasen: Yes you are right, all governments throughout the world should only focus on a single issue and not even consider anything else until that first issue is completed, as judged by random nobodies on the internet. I'm incredibly thankful you are not, nor will never be, in a position of any real power or responsibility.

Did they actually say that? Or Mari Miura is assuming they don't like same-sex marriage? Couldn't find source in Japanese.
