On JR the cheapest ticket was 130 yen, 3% of this being 3.9 yen, which has been rounded up to 140 yen. Is JR rounding up every ticket price by the nearest 10 yen instead of rounding up every increase of 5 yen or over?

If this rounding up to the nearest 10 yen on a single ticket price what they are doing on all single ticket prices represents a huge amount of money for JR. Think of how much the price of a teiki, a season ticket, could increase. The next scam will come in October when there is another 2% tax increase and another 10 yen added.

Will JR receive a price gouging warning? I doubt it. The Consumer Affairs Agency has no teeth.

Jr ticket prices like most vending machines are rounded to the 10yen as the machines can't handle 1 and 5 yen coins.

Pay with Suica and it is cheaper.

Consumer affairs in japan actually does have teeth, used em couple of times I reckon there will be no additional increase when another 2% added

The JR pricing has been on the news for over a week and you will see 2 prices cash and electronic money.

I am sure a lot of places/companies will take advantage of the situation and add a few yen to the price of products or services hoping most people will not notice or give it the old shogannai. The vending machine operators et al must love this. They can increase the price by about 10% in many cases as the machines will not handle 5 Yen coins.

I heard that there were 2 JR prices, but paying with my SUICA the last few days it seems that I am still being charged the whole 10yen per 'ride' increase (my 190yen fare became 200, etc.) maybe I misunderstood...

If they mean it, they have a lot of work on their hands...
