The danger lies in the simple fact that without the myth about Japanese quality there is nothing else that can lull an overseas customer into buying Japanese. That also explains why Koreans and even Chinese products start to challenge Japan in so many industries.

A little dramatic, isn't it? A problem with a gas pedal is going to sink an entire nation? I would think Toyota's voluntary recalls would bolster its good will.

The pedal issue is a long term material wear issue with pedals built in Canada by CTS (US company). Toyota's made in Japan used a pedal made by Denso (Japanese) which is why the recall is localized to certain models made in certain factories.
