The move to the Henoko district (in Nago, Okinawa Prefecture) was decided at a Japan-United States leaders' summit, so that's what's going to happen.

The American overlord has spoken!
It will not be a heliport after all, but a huge super base.
The US footprint in Okinawa is not to be reduced, but increased.
All paid for by the Japanese tax payer.
Doesn't it make you proud to know that your tax yen are contributing to Peace, Freedom and Democracy in South East Asia!
Of course, building this super base is against the will of the Okinawan people, but - hey, you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs, can you?

Give it a break. The land mass that is Futenma, is a hell of a lot bigger than the expansion of Schwab base.
Just another rehash of this dribble.

Amazing! Bertie, you have taken a poll and asked every single person on the Island to to what and how they think? Very irresponsible. I think it's a pretty good thing. As long as China and North Korea are a huge factor, America is NOT going anywhere.

bass4funk,
You're quite right, I haven't asked every single person on Okinawa whether they want the US military here in such numbers or not.
Nor have you.
But I do know that there is a large number of people who want the US off the island. Not just the Ospreys, but the works.
I think the GOP should find out exactly what the people of Okinawa think. It's time for a referendum.
And by the way, North Korea is a joke and China is a threat to the US economy only. And, let us not forget that, as you and many others have pointed out to me, the US is not here to protect Japan.
The only reason they are here is because they've persuaded the GOP to give them a HUGE subsidy.

Hmm, I think the Governor and his constituents may well have a word or five to say about that.
